Winter Springs is located on State Road 602 and its ZIP code is 34643. The name "Wintry Springs" was given to the community by Major General John F. Kennedy during his visit in 1961 as part of his tour of Florida's rural areas. He noted that "the springs give the place an icy quality which makes it wintery." In 1892, Richard Bachelder founded what would become WinterSprings phosphate mine and mill complex near present day Interstate 441 and US 27A (now US 92). The company prospered until 1903 when it went bankrupt due to overproduction from its phosphate mine; however, some remnants of Bachelder's company remain today including a museum at 1201 US 27A known as "Richard Bachelder Place". In 1925, A&W grocery store opened in WinterSprings with owner Wm. Henson becoming one of the first African Americans to own a business in northern Florida. Today A&W still operates a store within the community center across from SpringHill Elementary School - though without any connection to either Kennedy or Bachelder! An ice cream shop called 'Cupcake Kingdom' was also open for many years before being closed down in 2016 after allegations that staff had made lewd comments towards customers online and then acted on them offsite
