The town name originated with George Washington Wilkinson who named it after his home of Spring Valley, New York. In 1886, John Prentice donated land to the town for a new school district and park. The present day Main Street crosses under Wilkinson Boulevard just east of Uptown Park and leads northeast to US-1 (which forms the border with Jacksonville). In 1924, the city of Jacksonville annexed Winter Springs as its municipal boundaries expanded from its original eastern edge along Wilkinson Boulevard to encompass most of what is now Monroe County. On October 1, 1961 — one day after Winter Springs became an incorporated municipality — it adopted a municipally sponsored seal that has been used since then by both towns as their symbol. Winter Springs has a rich history dating back to 1892 when it was founded as an agricultural village on the edge of a swamp by three brothers who named their settlement "Winter Springs" after their home place in Germany. In 1902, the first post office in Winter Springs opened and mail from all over Florida passed through it until 1955 when Duval County was created and Winter Springs became part of that county. As a result,mail stopped passing through WinterSprings and its ZIP code began to reflect that reality. In 1904, A.L. Keys started operating Key-Horne Cotton Gin located on Ulysses Road just east of present day US 192 (the old alignment of US 192). This gin produced some of the finest cotton ever grown in Polk County and helped build what would become known as Key's legacy as one of the country's leading cotton gins. In 1908, Elisha Swayne established an ice cream parlor called Empire Early Ice Cream which quickly became one of WinterSprings' most popular attractions for customers during wintertime. The business continued operation into the 1990s before shutting down due to financial difficulties; however, Empire remains a well-remembered name in local history today thanks to its many contributions to winter sports and social events throughout the year. By 1920,Key's Legacy had been replaced by Wartburg Distributing Co., which operated until 1978 when it closed down due to heavy competition from larger companies within key industries such as automobiles and electronics among other things In later years Wartburg contributed much money towards charitable causes such as building two schools in Springdale near where they are now headquartered In 2002 Wartburg donated land for an indoor football stadium which will be used primarily for high school varsity games
