In the 1970s, construction began on what would become known as "The Mall." The mall was designed by architect Morley Safer and opened in 1977; it served as the community's main Shopping Center until its closure in 2009 due to budget cuts made by then- Mayor Buddy Dyer. After losing much of its commercial center after The Mall's closure, Winter Springs began developing its present day downtown area which includes several new businesses such as Barnes & Noble (now Macy's), KFC Extraordinary Chicken Sandwiches (now Chick-fil-A), CVS Pharmacy (now Walgreens),and two restaurants - Mexicos Mexican Cafe (now El Torito) and TGIF Palace Pizza - which have since been replaced by smaller businesses within the past few years including Dollar General store expansion west along SR 904 from US 1 to just east of I-Drive NE between University Avenue NE and Rollins Road NW., but plans remain for another restaurant/music venue called Live Nation Amphitheater which will include a large concert venue on campus adjacent to Stadium Village shopping center across I-Drive NE from US 1st Street NW.,
