The name "Winter Springs" came about because during wintertime the springs would freeze over and become a cold place to stay. The first post office in Winter Springs was established in 1893, and the first store opened in 1895. In 1903, Winter Springs incorporated as a village under the name of New Beginnings. In 1912, Winter Springs incorporated as a city under the name of Winter Park. In 1932, Winter Park changed its name to Orlando after then-Governor Claude Pompidou made an official visit towinterpark/. In 1974, when Orlando annexed neighboring Kissimmee into its city limits, WinterSprings became part of that annexation and continued to use its original municipal name until 1986 when it reverted back to its current spelling of WinterSprings

Winter Springs is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Aventura Combined Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Winter Springs were Spanish explorers who explored the area in 1565. In 1837, John Wesley Powell and his party discovered an oil well near Winter Springs while exploring the Osceola Mountains in Central Florida. After a brief exploration period, construction of a pipeline to transport crude oil from Pensacola began in 1839. A local farm owner named Wirt added phosphate fertilizer to the oil well and called it Spring Valley Station after his spring that produced lilies for sale nearby. The name stuck and Spring Valley became home to one of America's earliest petrochemical plants before being sold to Standard Oil in 1951. In 1902, Walter Prescott Webb purchased land adjacent to present-day Winter Springs from Hernando de Soto for $5,000 cash and began development of what would become known as Summerlin Business Park (later Summerlin). Webb donated 30 acres (12 hectares) of his property total to build both a park and school on its northeast corner lot; it has since been renamed Winter Creek Park. The park opened on November 11, 1904 with 123 families enjoying picnic areas, playgrounds, tennis courts and baseball diamonds; it also served as a center for community services such as library research programs and social dances sponsored by women’s auxiliary societies throughout the early 20th century until disbanding in 1966 due to budget cuts at state agencies.). One interesting tidbit about this time period is that many people living near Webb’s property worked on his Park via picking crops or doing unskilled labor during summer months which supported locals during wintermonths when no work could be found outside of town (). In 1927 Dr. James Moffit developed Moffit Hospital across street from Summerlin Business Park which became one of America's leading hospitals thanks largely theretofor Moffit giving over 4 acres (1 hectare) frontage on Uptown Boulevard opposite Orange Avenue for future hospital expansion creating pre-eminent modern day Winter Springs hospital today! There have been numerous expansions/modifications through out our history including: new building projects(like Moffit Cancer Center), addition/ deletion(of several blocks within boundary), Lucent Technologies annexation into city limits which resulted in creation of 3new districts - Medical District; Technology District & Financial District - all within boundaries granted by City Councilmember Barbara Jordan following public hearings held on January 25th thru February 2nd 1997 . Today there are over 100 buildings & structures located within City Limits encompassing more than 6000 sqft (~200 m2) inside confines Of Governmental Property!
Winter Springs was founded in 1867 by the Winter family. The family ran a grocery store and post office until 1912 when they donated land for a community center. In 1925, the town incorporated and added a school, library, and two churches. The population of Winter Springs grew rapidly after World War II as people moved to the area from all over Florida. In 1978, the town changed its name to Sunrise Beach because of its location on Florida's Indian River Lagoon.
