Winter Park is home of The Palm Beach Post newspaper and the Winter Park Resort, one of only six resorts in Florida that has both an AAA and 4-Diamond rating from the Ritz-Carlton Travel Club.

Winter Park, Florida is a town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 20,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Lake Buena Vista Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1904 and named fororney general Winthrop Sargent Winter. The first settler in Winter Park was James Fenton who platted the area around what is now Main Street and Railroad Avenue on November 17, 1887. The town name may have been suggested by then-Governor Stetson Sellers when he visited the area during his state Visit to Polk County on December 8, 1886. At that time, Sellers noted that "the climate must be very severe hereabouts since there has not been a frost this season". Winter Park's history dates back to 1904 when Attorney General Winthrop Sargent Winter recommended that the name be changed from "Leesburg" to "Winter Park". This suggestion came about because of an existing settlement called Leesburg which had been established in 1903 by five brothers - John Lee Leesburgh (1860-1947), Arthur Lewis Leesburgh (1874-1958), Harry W. Lee (1877-1950), George Prentice Postlethwait (1881-1968) and William Halsey Postlethwait (1884-1966). After much deliberation, it was decided that Winter Park would be more fitting given its location and history within Polk County as well as its namesake's support for change within the community. In January 1907, following signature of an ordinance changing the name to Winter Park, Mayor John Ahern laid out streetslots in what is now Main Street and Railroad Avenue. On February 12 of that year – just two months after incorporation – Mayor Ahern dedicated First Baptist Church which stood on what are now East Seventh Street and North Broadway Boulevard today. This congregation served both as a church/synagogue as well as a booster club for many years before moving into their current building on State Road 711 in 1957 adjacent to American Legion Hall later renamed US Naval Forces Southern Florida Headquarters Building after World War II veteran Admiral Chester Nimitz Jr.. On May 6 1906 – one year after incorporation – winter park residents built their first home with lumber from local sawmills along West Fourth Street between Railroad Ave./North Third Street and Interstate 95/South Third Street where it still stands today! That same year also saw another milestone for our community when we received our water system from Mr J D Wright who donated 1 million gallons of water per day! In 1916 our school district opened up shop at 208 N Main St which later became known as Mrs Pfeiffer High School! Our present day schools were built following a directive from then Superintendent Dr J C Whitehurst who stated “It will be but proper that all important public buildings should be located near each other so that instruction can easily reach everyone”! In 1966 an addition to our village center was added including gymnasiums/flexible classrooms/multiroom dining areas etc., thus making us one complete village… until recently! The community enjoyed a resurgence in popularity after the opening of Walt Disney World in 1955, and Winter Park grew rapidly with development of new parks, shopping malls, and other tourist attractions. In recent years, however, Winter Park has faced some competition from nearby Orlando's growing population and economy.
