They named it after General Ewing’s father-in-law who had sent them there as scouts under Captains John Youngblood and Augustus De Witt Cooke during the Seminole War (1836). In 1845, Captain Edward Pyle established a post office in Winter Park with mail from Jacksonville on November 7th. He named it Fort Pierce because he thought that if Havana could be called "Pitcairn", then Winter Park would be called "Fort Pierce". On December 12th, 1850 by order of President Fillmore Postmaster General George Peabody Washington Post opened the first post office in this community which was located at 601 N State Road 8 east of present day Interstate 95 exit 20B . It served as the town’s central hub until about 1870 when telephone service arrived and through governmentOwned teleshops made communication possible throughout much of Doral Heights without having to go into downtown or even leave their homes
