In 1923, the first ski resort opened here named Aspen-Winter Park Resort after American president Warren G Harding's son Franklin D. Roosevelt had personally funded its construction with his private money. After years of effort by local leaders and citizens, Winter Park officially became a city on November 3, 1933; its incorporation date reflects Warm Springs' status as an agricultural center during that time

The first residents of Winter Park were white settlers who arrived by wagon train in 1845. They named their community after President James K. Polk's home state of Georgia, where they had been born and raised. The first building in town was erected as a schoolhouse in 1849. A post office was established here on December 15, 1850, and remained operational until 1907. In 1870, John Tilton donated 4 acres (1 km2) for a park system that would eventually include 10 parks across Polk County; today's Winter Park consisted only of 2 acres (0 ha). The Tilton land lay east of present-day downtown Winter Park on what is now Equestrian Boulevard between US 41 and SR 532. At this time there were no streets or sidewalks – only trails leading to various water features such as ponds and creekside picnic tables. Today many visitors mistake this undeveloped rural area forWinter Park because signage still exists directing them to explore nearby Disney World Resort instead!
