Winter Park is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 19,851 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County and home to the University of Central Florida. The city was named after George Winter, who donated land for its creation in 1892. In 1902, Winter Park became part of Orlando; it reverted to Polk County when Orange County was created in 1907. Winter Park is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 26,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first inhabitants of Winter Park were the Timucua people. They arrived in 1696 and founded what is now known as Timucua Village on Indianola Hill, where they built their village burned down by Spanish settlers in 1763. In 1837, General James K. Polk took command of Union army during the American Civil War and winterized near Winter Park for use as a winter encampment for troops and supplies. When he left to campaign in North Carolina in 1861, his army destroyed much of Winter Park before moving on to Jacksonville to besiege Confederate forces there at Fort Donelson. After the war ended and General Polk returned home, he ordered that all buildings within City limits be torn down including the original Timucua Village site which was reconstructed as White's Hotel near State Road 517 and US 1/US 441 (now Old Winter Park Boulevard). In 1892Winter Park was incorporated as a separate municipality subject to Stonington Township with a population of 10 residents per square mile while Kissimmee had a population of 25 residents per square mile; both municipalities were combined again when Broward County was created from parts of Palm Beach County in 1907 In 1933-1934 Winthrop Rockefeller organized an effort to create an amusement park outside Orlando using money from his Standard Oil Company assets; this project failed but Rockefeller did spend $5 million building Universal Studios Hollywood west of Orlando with its theme parks - Universal Studio Florida (1975) and Walt Disney World (1971). This led to another attempt by Rockefeller to develop an amusement park east of Orlando called Osceola Lake Landfill; this also failed but resulted in the construction over 12 miles (19 km) of expressway between East Orange Avenue (US 1) south of Sanford Stadium northward into Osceola County just south of Interstate 95 which became known today as UF Parkway . The area now known as University Drive runs along this route. For more than 50 years UF Parkway has been one continuous arterial highway running through downtown WinterPark with no sign or interchange indicating that it once served two different townships: one twinned with Osceola Lake Landfill while the other continued east-west Via Hwy 431 until its current routing via I-95 . In 2006 Winthrop Rockefeller donated land next to Scripps Research Institute toward creating what would become Brown University campus inside what would have been Philips Arena if it had not been demolished due to lack funding after being acquired by Univision Communications Inc.: during renovation work for school expansion on these lands meanwhile University Drive run concurrently through downtownWinterpark without any signage marking it once serving two different communities
Winter Park was founded in 1892 as a small community on the banks of the St. Johns River. The area now includes Winter Park, Marriottsville and other areas. In 1916, Winter Park became part of Miami-Dade County and in 1926 it became an independent city. In 1959, Winter Park merged with adjacent Marriottsville to form a single city.
