The first person to live in Winter Park was J.C. Nichols in 1892. A post office called Winthrop was established in 1893, and remained in operation until 1907. The population increased rapidly during World War I because of military service and GI programs by the U.S government; the city became known as "the wartime capital of Florida". After the war ended, growth slowed but never stopped due to suburbanization and other economic factors; by 2000, Winter Park had over 20% of its total population within 10 miles (16 km). Phase II annexation by Sanford occurred in 2002 which added an additional 11,000 residents In 2007, Winter Park voters approved $5 million for public infrastructure projects such as new roads and sidewalks as well as a new water main replacement project that will improve drainage throughout town center There are several ski resorts located within or near Winter Park including Aspen Highlands Resort & Spa (Aspen), Keystone Lodge Resort & Spa (Keystone), Deer Valley Resort (Deer Valley), Heavenly Skiing Company (Heavenly) and Copper Mountain Resort (Copper Mountain). Several golf courses also serve the town center; Aspen Highlands Golf Club (), Deer Valley Golf Club (), Keystone Golf Course () and Copper Mountain Golf Course (). There is also a small business district with several stores located on Highway 347 around downtown Winter Park

Winter Park is a city in central Florida, United States. The population was 26,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lake County and part of the Orlando metropolitan area. Winter Park was founded in 1907 by John A. Winter and named for him because of its cold winter weather during the season. It became an incorporated town in 1912, and a city in 1959. The current mayor is Ron Nirenberg. Winter Park was originally settled by Russian immigrants who arrived there around 1855 as fur traders looking for new land to settle after their trek across Siberia had been unsuccessful. They named their settlement after John A.'s brother-in-law, David Winter (1785-1857), who had come overLAND from England some time earlier with his family and built a house on what is now State Road 476 near Christmas Tree Lane just east of North Avenue. In 1907, John A.'s son Andrew moved to Winter Park with his wife Maud, renamed it after himself, and started farming land hereabouts which he eventually sold off to other developers including Harry Leach and Edwin Bouchard. In 1912, when incorporation into Polk County was granted to it by Govinda Peddle under the provisions of the act establishing Polk County (and taking effect on December 1st), Winter Park became its first municipal government - an event that has been commemorated annually ever since by staging a parade through downtown on Saturday Evening preceding Independence Day festivities there! Incorporation came about due to various factors - principally John A.'s efforts to get more money for school construction via annexation bids received from adjacent municipalities; court decisions upholding Town officials' right to levy taxes against citizens not living within town limits; civic boosterism spearheaded by Mayor Harry Pollock culminating in City Council approval on May 2nd 1913; and voter demand resulting from snowstorms & freezes preceding November 3rd 1914! Today's city boundaries were drawn up circa 1960 when most of present day Lake County (including much of present day Winter Park) was acquired following passage of law providing forLake Countyhood! Despite this impressive record - even today many residents remain unsure as to exactly WHERE winter park actually sits geographically within our great state... Some recent historians have suggested that it may be marginally located east OF Kissimmee off State Road 436/Highway 27 rather than west OF Interstate 8 Speedway/State Road 527!! Nevertheless,... remnants of Pioneer days can still be seen throughout downtown where snowmen still stand tall outside businesses along Main Street between US Highway 476 & SR 528... even if much newer homes sit atop older ones making things difficult sometimes finding street addresses etc.;Indeed one must journey out several miles east along CR 436 just past US HWY 27 before finally reaching WINTER PARK proper!!! Much like life itself... each day offers something new & exciting!
Winter Park was founded in 1936 by the Winter Park Resort Company. The resort company was incorporated in December of 1935 and opened its first season in 1937. In 1941, the resort company leased land from the Miami-Dade County government to build a ski area on what is now known as Old Winter Park Road. The ski area opened in February of 1942 and became one of Southern Florida's most popular tourist destinations. The resort company purchased additional land from the county in 1944 and built a new ski area, called New Winter Park Road, on it. In 1948, the resort company merged with two other resorts, Sun Valley Resort and Bryce Canyon Ski Area to form Sun Valley-Bryce Canyon skiing Areas Incorporated. In 1951, Sun Valley-Bryce Canyon Ski Areas Incorporated merged with Aspen Ski & Snowboarding Company to become Aspen/Sun Valley Skiing Areas Incorporated.
