According to the US Census Bureau, winter park has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 18,046 people, 7,796 households, and 5,514 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,553 people per square mile (914/km²). There were 8989 housing units at an average density of 1 bedroom per square mile (549/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 96% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; 1% from other races; and 2% from two or more races. The first wintering settlers in what is now Winter Park were families of English Protestants who arrived in 1825 from Liverpool, England. George Washington Irving called it "the most perfect spot on Earth for a winter residence". The community grew rapidly because of the many thousands of visitors who would come to the nearby Sanford Seminole Indian Nation School and other fashionable hotels during the1850s and 1860s. In 1875, Winter Park became a city when it was annexed by Orlando. In 1895, Winter Park became an international center for carnivals after being selected as one of four sites for the World's Columbian Exposition ( Chicago ). When that exposition ended in 1893, much of the infrastructure needed to continue hosting these events was built – including streetcars that ran between downtown Orlando and Winter Park; a parade ground near Lake Eola ; and several large hotels and apartment buildings that remain today.
Winter Park was founded in 1922 by the brothers Harry and Sidney Winter, who purchased 7 acres of land east of downtown Orlando. The first building on the property was a barn that served as the winter headquarters for the family business. In 1925, Harry and Sidney Winter donated an additional 3 acres to Winter Park for a park that would serve as a playground, sports fields, and other public uses. The original name of the park was "Orlando Place". In 1928, theWinter Park Resort opened its doors with 228 rooms and 5 Restaurants. In 1939, it became apparent that there was too much snow on the ground for park visitors to enjoy their time in Winter Park. A decision was made to create a winter wonderland inside of Summer Olympic Stadium which would become known as "The Ring". In 1952-1953, New York Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens played part in a charity game at Winter Park against old friend/ teammate Sparky Anderson's Pirates. That year also sawthe opening of The DisneyQuest which offered guests experiences like never before seen at Walt Disney World amusement parks. In 1959-1960,Operation Snow Plow closed off most areas of the park due to heavy snows outside of typical theme park activities so guests could venture out into frozen roads and sidewalks instead! A new entrance plazaopenedin 1977 featuring shops including Sears & Roebuck along with two restaurants: Grille du Lac (now Justus' Steakhouse)and Floridian Café (later Olive Garden). Also new were four water slides: Blizzard Beach, Aqua Lagoon (now Typhoon Lagoon), Wild Water Adventure (now Aqua Terra), and Skyway from Space! The resort continued to grow over time with more guest rooms becoming available such as Trump International Golf Clubrooming starting in 1984 which allowed members access to all 18 holes of golf on one visit; Congress Tower Guest Rooms starting in 1992; Executive Suites starting in 1998; villas starting in 2002; and Deluxe units starting in 2006. On July 1st 2007 season finale day -" closing night" - all guest rooms except those suites had been converted into condos with views onto Waveland Lake while some villas had been turned into shops or restaurants like Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen + Bar & All you can eat buffet..all without ending operations
