The climate in Winter Haven is mild with average annual precipitation of 509.0 inches (1,711 mm). According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Winter Haven has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa". The name Winter Haven comes from wintering on the 'Haven' island near the mouth of the St Johns River when it was first settled by English colonists in 1763-1765. The town was platted in 1868 and named for General James Kesselring who had been commandant of Fort Brooke on Hilton Head Island during World War I and then president of Germany's Free German Branch until his death in 1922. One early resident recalled that: "We all dug trenches to keep outtermites and snakes and we brought over all sorts of animals from around Florida because there were no other people hereabouts...I remember one day there was this big black snake slithering across our path as we walked to church." A post office called Winter Haven was established in 1869, and remained in operation until 1959. The first settler to arrive in what would become Winter Haven had come overland from Georgia four years earlier on October 14th, 1857 via Mobile Bayou along what is now US 1 southbound between FM 431 (now US 301) and US 98 eastbound between Interstate 95E (now I-95W) and FM 527 (now US 41). George Washington Miller opened a ferry service connecting Mobile Bayou with Inlet Sound which he called "The Ferry Landing." The history of Winter Haven, Florida began with the arrival of Europeans in the area in the early 1800s. The first permanent European settler in what is now Winter Haven was Jean-Baptiste Boudreau, who arrived in 1819. He and his family built a cabin on a small island near the mouth of the Caloosahatchee River. Boudreau named his settlement after Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors. In 1825, a group of Frenchmen led by Jacques Marquette discovered an oil well at present-day Stonington Landing on the east side of Marco Island. They decided to drill for oil there and soon began producing gasoline from shale rock near their wellhead. The town started commercial development around this time, with stores and hotels opening up along State Road A1A. By 1830, Winter Haven had become one of Florida's largest cities with over 10,000 residents.
