Winter Haven is a city in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 14,909 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Broward County. The town was founded in 1898 by men from Fort Lauderdale, Florida who desired to escape Palm Beach's summer heat. The name "Winter Haven" comes from a Native American term meaning "safe haven." In 1923, Winter Haven became part of Lake Worth City and again in 1959 when it merged with Plantation Village to become a city. The first recorded reference to Winter Haven occurs in 1859 when Colonel James Waddell wrote about his visit to the area as an observer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers under General David Dixon Cranch. He noted that there were numerous salt marshes and bays scattered throughout what is now Broward County but that they had all been drained and improved by Captain John Stroud who built Fort Washington on Jupiter Beach north of Clearwater Harbor in 1859-1860 during the Second Seminole War against Spanish forces led by Antonio López de Santa Clara y la Hoz. At this time, Jupiter Beach was called New Port Royal (now Sunrise) because it served as an embarkation point for vessels sailing between Cuba and Pensacola Bay before transferring passengers and goods overland to Fort Washington on Key Biscayne Peninsula which became known as South Florida's premiere port for shipping through the Bahamian channel into Tampa Bay. On October 9, 1861 Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Woodward established a military post at Winter Haven named Fort Walton after General Walton's father-in-law Major General Richard Addison Steele who had been killed at Battle of Palo Alto on September 26th – one year prior to wintering at Winter Haven with Steele’s command at nearby Aventura! At this time Ft Walton consisted of three wallsed structures:Fort Walton (northwest corner), Fort Myers (southwest corner), and Charleston Barracks (east side). Each walled structure could house up to 30 soldiers/officers! During Confederate times Captains Troup & Ford sailed their brigantine “Anna Belle” daily from Jacksonville Landing across Tampa Bay bound for Havanaoe carrying cargoes including slaves sent back home via MobileBay; however Anna Belle got lost off Cape Coral leaden fate never able her recapture! Consequently Anna Belle lay stranded east endofthe bayou near present day White Sands beach until February 1863 when she finally arrived safe & sound at Jacksonville Landing…. In 1892 property reclamation began within what is now Spring Hill Township calling it Ancliff Park after Gertrude Ancliff – wife of Rear Admiral George Dewey – Commandant US Naval Forces Caribbean Section during World War I & II then First Lady USHCA during peacetime years beginning 1919 until her death in 1942….. The total land area comprising today’s Winterhaven municipality was 724 acres……Consequently only 2 ½ths or just over halfof present day town boundaries were ever officially established thru annexation……However many residents lived& worked downtown well beyond original boundaries…..Today most everything within original boundaries has changed hands multiple times thru annexation or purchase……………So much so that if you wantTo know where your ancestor livedOR worked back in those early days simply Google their name OR TownName !!! There really isn't much written about our community origins other than some mention here or there BUT suffice it to say we're pretty proud descendents of pioneers John Stroud (& family) AND Captain John Ford !!!
