One of the earliest settlements in Winter Haven was a small farmstead established by Johnathan Maynard in 1795. The area now known as Winter Haven was first populated by Native Americans, who were hunter-gatherers. In 1838, the first white person to live in what is now Winter Haven was Capt. George Armstrong Cockerill, who built his home on present-day Third Street. A year later, Winthrop Sargent arrived with his family and set up shop on Second Street. In 1846, the town received its charter from Florida Governor James K. Polk and became a part of Miami County. In 1916,Winter Haven became one of the municipalities within Everglades National Park when it was annexed into the park. It remains an unincorporated community within the park today and is managed by Everglades National Park Service staff.
