In 1959 Winter Haven merged with neighbouring city of Gainesville to form one large municipality called Winter Haven-Gainesville. At the same time, all water resources within City Limits were transferred from Riviera Beach-Winter Haven to Gainesville so that they could become self-sufficient as municipalities
