Wilton Manors is a town in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,867 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area and is known for its Bahamian culture and resorts. The name Wilton Manors comes from two sources: one was derived from Indian word "Wilton" meaning "a place where the trees are high," while the other derives from Englishman's term "Manor" which referred to a manor house or estate. In 1795, British General James Wilkinson named his plantation after Captain John Wilton of HMS Beagle who had explored Florida during that year's expedition. Captain Wickiton had also landed on this peninsula in 1788 when he led an expedition through what is now Duval County looking for new land to sell to Spain as part of their cession of Louisiana to Great Britain. The first European settlement in Duval County was made by Spanish colonists in 1692 with the landing of Serrano de la Vega on Santa Rosa Key (now Blackwater Key). In 1821, Colonel Isaac Butt built a small cabin on the bluff above present-day Wilton Manor Road about four miles northwest of Jacksonville proper. He became known as the father of Jacksonville because he developed it into an important commercial center during its early years. In 1824, Colonel Butt donated nearly all his holdings including 2,500 acres (10 km2) along Walnut Creek east of Jacksonville to establish what would become Jacksonville Township; it included present-day Wilton Manor Road and much of what is now Interstate 441 northbound and I-95 southbound. In 1827–1828 Trinity Episcopal Church was established at Orchard Point near present day Walton Beach by Revs.(Rev.)
