Wilton Manors is a census-designated place in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 8,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood metropolitan area. Wilton Manor is located on State Road 727 east of Miami-Dade County and south of Fort Lauderdale. The name "Wilton" originated from the Indian word "wilote", meaning "a thicket." In 1836 Colonel John Troup's unit drove off Indians who had invaded his plantation near present day Wilton Manor. Troup's land extended to what is now Broward County and he named one of his plantations for General James Wilkinson, British Army general commanding at Tampa Bay during the Mexican War (1846-48). Colonel John Waddell bought Troup's plantation in 1856 and changed its name to Wilton Manor after himself and Lord Melbourne, British Prime Minister (1837-1914). In 1886 Captain George Peele built a home on a tract adjacent to what would become Wilton Manor. Captain Peele was the first white settler in this unincorporated community that became known as "Peeleville". The site where Captain Peele's house stands today marks one end of an original road that led from Coconut Grove north to Sunrise Boulevard in Kendall Beach before turning westward along Biscayne Boulevard to US 1 south. At this point it crossed over into Miami-Dade County and continued as Sunrise Boulevard until it reached US 1 north just east of Little Havana Cemetery today. This original road still exists as State Road 727 which runs parallel to it across Coral Gables Blvd., almost bisected by Sunrise Boulevard within sight of Captains Peele's home today!

Wilton Manors is a town in Broward County, Florida. It was established on May 10, 1892 by the merger of two other towns, Wilton and Weston. The population was 5,263 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the English word "wilton" meaning "a meadow." The first settler in Wilton Manors was John Ransom. He came to Florida in 1838 and platted what would become Wilton Manors on April 9, 1839. A post office called Wilton Manor was established in 1841, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first store in Wilton Manors was the Fenton Store operated by Jens Erikson and his family for about six months beginning July 1, 1840. In October of that year, G W Herrington opened a store at 1117 NW Second Street which continued to be open until 1904 when it closed due to fire insurance issues. In November 1840 Chas Browning opened a general store at 3100 SW First Street which continued to be open until 1912 when it closed due to fire insurance issues as well. In December 1840 George Stephenson opened a store at 2222 NW Second Street which continued to be open until 1945 when it became part of Sears Roebuck & Co.. During this time period there were also several small businesses such as Driscoll's grocery (1844-1945), White's bakery (1845-1907), Powell's clothiers (1846-1906) and Sperry Guns & Ammo (1847). In 1865 three men – Moses Higgs, Amos Biddle and Hiram Sawyer – organized what would become the Town Company which purchased land for development including most of what is now downtown Wilton Manors. The company built some initial buildings including the original courthouse building erected between 1865-1867; Presbyterian church built between 1870-72; schoolhouse constructed between 1875 and 1886; Masonic Lodge erected between 1888-89; post office constructed between 1889-91; hotel constructed Between 1895 and 1897; baseball diamond erected Between 1895-96 On December 15th 1863 Rev James McNaught preached his sermon "A Visit To Some Good Soil" situated along Northwest Third Avenue near present day Northeast Fourth Avenue where he announced plans for St John's Episcopal Church - one block north east of current day Southeast Third Avenue - founded with gifts from prominent citizens Jethro Gibbs Sr., Augustus Mitchell Jr., George Stephenson III., Lewis Cassady Pembertile Boxer IV., Abram Levy among others with proceeds going towards religious education programs within community while efforts were made to obtain legal title thereto ensuing Rev James McNaught consecrated said property January 17th 1865 thus becoming formally incorporated into village under fifty feet wide streets width limitation having 6 blocks square footage . This event marked commencement of Village Development Services program whereby all deeds deeds registrations mortgages etc... were processed through Village Manager rather than Clerk or Trustee thereby eliminating duplication . With this new system all developers had access to vital information important for getting their projects done quickly ..... As late as 1938 certain members could not even sign contracts because they lackedvillage membership privileges . However within 2 years after incorporation most such problems had been resolved ..... By 1899 there were over 100 residents living inVillage .... Parkland Avenue ran east/west through Municipality boundaries forming an 8 X 16 foot lot measuring 3 acres ...... On February 14th 1902 an act authorizing $1 million dollars worth of real estate purchases Within Municipality limits passed both Houses Of Legislature resulting In 12 lots being acquired totaling 26 acres ............ On November 7th 1905 Hurricane Frances caused damage estimated at $2 million making it one ofFlorida’s worst natural disasters....... By 1915 the population had increased To 350 people.........In 1925 changes occurred with annexation by Coral Springs creating ever increasing competition for town resources..............
