Wilton Manors is a town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Wilton Manors was John Smeaton, who arrived in 1836. He and his family built a cabin on the present-day corner of US 90 and County Road 553A. In 1840, William Prentice established a post office at Wilton Manors after travelling from Jacksonville to survey the area. By 1845, many residents had settled around Prentice's store and mill; within two years it had become an important commercial center for the area with stores selling goods such as flour, cornmeal, bacon, soap and other items needed for farming and ranching operations. In 1870s large landowners began purchasing land around Wilton Manor including what is now Sanford and Kissimmee counties; these men laid out roads and developed rural settlements with small farms surrounding their homes. By 1900 most of the rural areas around Wilton Manor had been abandoned as cotton fields took over; however some old dwellings still stand today including one that has been preserved as part of the Regional History Museum complex in downtown Sanford. In 1916 local physician Dr Samuel Halsey moved to Wilton Manor from Daytona Beach to open a practice which he continued until his death in 1951. Some notable residents of Wilton Manor during this time include artist Julius Rosenwald (1884-1965), author Bessie Lou Gehrig (1904-1996) and movie star James Cagney (1915-1987). The town became an incorporated municipality on February 14th 1922 under name "Wilton" after Mr Edwin AWilkinson Mayor who served from 1922 to 1945 when he was succeeded by Mrs Ada E Cookman due to term limits set by then mayor Harry W Foley Jr.. On December 7th 1957 following approval by voters via referendum annexation of neighboring communities of Lakeland Heights eastward along I-4/US 301 were made effective effective January 1st 1958 becoming also unincorporated towns within Polk County . The annexed communities are: Belle Glade (January 1st 1958), Clearwater Hills (February 15th 1959), Deerfield Beach (March 3rd 1959), City Park East (April 10th 1959), Deerfield Lakeshawna Creekside Estates westward along US 301 until reachingNW Indian Wells Rd where it joins Belle Glade April 17th 1960 making both towns full municipalities once again under new mayoral leadership with Mrs Cookman serving as Mayor pro tem until her passing in 1982 . After long deliberations by elected officials several annexation proposals were filed seeking membership into Seminole County but all proposals were denied because Seminole County did not have any seats available on its county commission
