On July 30, 1912, President William Howard Taft granted Official status to Wilton Manors Community Association which helped promote development in the area including purchasing land at Swindon Road and Expressway which would become what are now University Parkway and Fair Oaks Boulevard. On November 5th, 1923, Hurricane Frances struck but only caused minor damage to homes in town limits while causing extensive damage across much of central Florida including Wilton Manor which sustained severe damage with over 100 injuries reported statewide. More than $2 million worth of damages were done with many people homeless following the storm Broad Street into town limits until they were finally evacuated on December 4th when winds reached speeds over 50 mph (80 km/h). In response to Hurricane Andrew's devastating landfall on August 24th 1992 residents of both towns started work on building a levee system that would protect both communities from future floods however tragically this project never saw completion due to funding limitations within state government; flooding again occurred in 2004 during Hurricane Katrina making it all too clear that such an endeavor wasn't wise given recent history! Today there are few reminders of those struggles past although some small businesses remain such as The Grapes grocery store which has been open since 1978 adjacent to Park High School providing fresh fruit available everyday for residents and visitors alike!
