In 1887, John Wilton founded Wilton Manors Ammunition Company Limited with a small manufacturing site on Northwest Fourth Street in Wilton Manors. In 1902, he moved to his current location and began producing high-quality shot shells for both handguns and rifles from an old armory on Northwest First Street inWilton Manors. His products were well known and highly respected throughout the United States until World War II when ammunition production came to an end due to wartime restrictions. Wilton Manors is located on Lake Worth Boulevard and Highway 442 east of Orlando. The date of Wilton's founding is unknown but it may have been during the early 1800s due to its proximity to Fort Butler and other Seminole Indian villages. The town name may come from "Willow Grove" or "Wilton Grove". In 1881, a post office was established in Wilton with the name of "Aiken." By 1907, allresidential property had been developed and the post office moved to its current location. A new school building was built in 1912-13 and named after Colonel James H. Ladd (1848-1925), an officer in the Confederate Army who served as governor of Florida Territory from 1861-1865. In 1925, four philanthropists founded Ladd Ranch which includes much of today's downtown area including most of what is now Ladd Park and portions of northlake Drive and southpark Drive. At that time there were no schools within walking distance so children would enter through a large gate off Highway 442 which led into what are now Ladd Park/Lake Worth Boulevard streetsides parking lots across from where they walked to school each day until 1959 when Broward County opened their first high school on that site adjacent to then-LADD Elementary School (now Glades Middle School). According to The Miami Herald article dated October 25th 2009 about plans for development near Interstate 95 by Walton Wyndham International Airport expansion proponent airport developer Michael Sussman: "Sussman said he expects traffic congestion caused by airport expansion will be lessened if he can find land for an expressway connecting I-95 with I-4 leading southward out Kissimmee; however...he declined comment on whether he has Synovate [a Houston based private engineering firm] working on a study for possible highway connection."
