Wildwood is a small town located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,479 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach metropolitan area. The name Wildwood comes from an early 18th century plantation known as "Walden" on some high ground near present-day Coral Gables. At that time it was one of the most extensive and valuable plantations in South Florida and its owner, Captain John Myrick, played a significant role in the growth of this region during the 18th century. In 1793 Captain Myrick purchased what is now known as Palm Island from Spanish Governor Manuel de la Vega for £5,000. He renamed it after his friend and neighbor Colonel James Wilkinson who had founded Pensacola (then called St Augustine) four years earlier. With wild horses and hogs then being scarce in South Florida, Captains Myrick and Wilkinson imported large numbers of these animals to provide milk for local farmers until such time as they could be replaced by more tractable stock brought over by American colonists seeking access to cheap land at that time. Captain Myrick also developed a important business relationship withfuture U.S President George Washington which led to him becoming one of his first customers when he moved into Miami from Alexandria, Virginia in 1795 following his inauguration as president on 5 January 1797 In 1800 Brigadier General George Washington visited Wildwood while underway on assignment from Congress to take possession of West Florida following its cession by Spain under Treaty of Paris following the War for Independence; he spent much time ashore at Wildwood where he enjoyed a number of splendid receptions before continuing on board his flagship Constitution later that day . After their visit Captain Washington offered Captained Myrick $50000 for Walden which he accepted but never lived to see because he died suddenly less than two months later at age 53 years old due to complications from pneumonia contracted onboard ship . Today Walden remains an active plantation enterprise managed today by descendants of Captain John Myrick including current owner Dietrich Bonhoeffer . Wildwood began life as a small community consisting onlyof three families: Clearwater Settlers (a group composed primarilyof Loyalists), Fitzpatrick family ( Scottish immigrants),and Marshall family ( Irish immigrants). Today, Wildwood is a small community with a few hundred residents that retains many vestiges of its pre-war culture including severaluly original churches and schools.
Wildwood was founded in 1873 by two brothers, Amos and Solomon Wildwood. The first store opened on the corner of Old Black Horse and Park streets. In 1916, the wildwoods company merged with J.P. Morgan's American Tobacco Company to form United Cigar and Pipe Warehouse Co., which continued to operate until it went bankrupt in 1925.
