In 1957, Wildwood incorporated as a cityhood under state law which gave it greater municipal powers than any village or town within its boundaries. On July 1, 1958, Mayor John Wolkentin made history when he became the first mayor of Wildwood City Hall after being elected unopposed in a special election following the resignation of his predecessor Leroy Payne Jr.. During Wolkentin's term many new programs were put into effect such as extracurricular activities (such as music & dance nights), nightlife initiatives (such as prohibition enforcement), police services (including fingerprinting program) and fire protection (sponsoring streetlight surveys). This type of government interventionism is continued today by current Mayor Rick D'Angelo who also served during Wolkentin's terms from 1988 to 2002

By 1840,Wildwoods had become one of the most important lumber towns in Florida due to its good geographical features and long snows which allowed for high-quality lumber production seasonally. In 1865, John Wesley Hardin settled in western Seminole County and started operating a gristmill that became known as the “Harmony Mill” due to its rhythmic grinding sound that could be heard miles away. This mill supplied flour for local breweries as well as other businesses across central Florida such as Sears & Roebuck and Joplin Brewery (now Belchertown Brewing). Another early pioneer in Wildwoods was Drayton Copley who arrived with his family from Connecticut in 1836 while traveling through Central Florida on their way to establish themselves among the Seminole Indian tribe at Fort Bayard near Tampa Bayou Bridge (now Belle Glade). With access to fresh water resources that were still being discovered at this time along with timberland available only during certain seasons, Drayton quickly established himself as a successful landowner and farmer in southern Florida
