The town started off as a small farming community, and by 1825 it had grown to include a population of over 100 people. In 1828, the town was renamed Wildwood after President James K. Polk's estate in Georgia. Wildwood experienced some significant growth during the First Seminole War (1835-1842). The town became an important stop on the supply route for warriors and their supplies heading into Florida. Additionally, Wildwood became a popular hot spot for residents due to its natural resources and lax laws governing alcohol. After the war ended, Wildwood's population continued to grow rapidly, reaching 1,500 by 1860. During Reconstruction (1868-1877), WildWOOD experienced heavy political censorship from white Republicans led by Governor William Troup. As a result of this censorship, many African Americans left the town for better opportunities elsewhere during this time period. By 1870 however, Wildwood's population had nearly doubled to 2,000 people and its economy was thriving thanks to new businesses such as meatpacking plants and tanneries. In 1915, wildwood annexed neighboring towns of Belleair Beach and Mayport which raised the total population size to 6,000 people by 1930s standards . This rapid growth led to increased congestion in wildwood which caused several streets to be closed off during rush hours in order to allow more people through per day . This lack of space also caused problems with traffic backups that often stretched down one block each way during peak periods
