Wildwood is a census-designated place (CDP) in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that became Wildwood was originally known as "Natchez" because of its abundance of Natchez oil wells and shipping lanes. A post office called Wildwood was established in 1881, and remained in operation until 1911. The name comes from the wild woodsy setting of the community where it developed. In 1907, developer John Kirby purchased land east of Interstate 441 to create what would become Wildwood Park; he named it after his home state of Delaware. In 1959, construction began on Interstate 441 which linked Daytona Beach with Jacksonville on the north side and Pensacola on the south side; Wildwood Avenue was truncated when I-4 reached its terminus near US 192/SR 44 about northeast of town center. At first no one lived in Wildwood Park but development soon escalated as people commute into Orlando or Jacksonville for work or pleasure; by 2000 there were over 2,000 residents living within . By 2006,Wildwood had become an incorporated community with a mayor and city council who provided limited government services to residents while maintaining control over all aspects of community life through their elected officials which included: managing day-to-day operations such as policing and firefighting; developing policies for economic development including zoning regulations;and creating marketing strategies to bring new businesses to town while preserving cultural heritage sites like Old Natchez Landing which remain operational today despite being abandoned by developers more than 20 years ago due to federal Muirland Management Act concerns about potential environmental damage done bydevelopment without proper coordination between agencies responsible for both nature conservation and public access.
