Wildwood is located in Polk County, Florida, on the latter's southern border with Lake Okeechobee. As of the 2010 census, its population was 5,272. It is a small town that originated as a cattle and horse market town. The name Wildwood comes from a local Indian word meaning "happy hunting ground." The first Europeans to explore what is now Polk County were Spanish explorers in 1568 who named it La Villita. In 1809, American General Andrew Jackson sent parties of men into the area searching for new land to annex as part of his effort to gain favor with Spain. He called these expeditions la Februaryistas because they occurred during February (the month after Florida became U.S. territory). In 1810, Captain John Smith discovered a island in the Kissimmee River which he named Jacksonville and founded Jacksonville Landing on it in 1811; this led to the nickname "Wildwood" being applied to all of Polk County by early residents and visitors alike. In 1821, Spanish explorer José de Escobar discovered what would become known as Brickell Key while exploring along Jupiter River; he called it Isla Negra (Black Isle). The key was later renamed Escobar Key by Governor Juana García de Quesada y Mendoza upon her visit there in 1826 due to its resemblance to Biscayne Key at Miami Beach, Florida which she had seen on an earlier trip across Panama Canal; however, no European settlement resulted from this until 1830 when James Pindell established himself at Stonington Bayou near present-day Dania Beach onEscobarKey after purchasing portions of Isla Negra from prior Native American owners He soon realized that this isolated piece of land could not support large numbers of people so he abandoned his settlement and returned home before learning that one or more other Spaniards had also built hereabouts and naming their colony San Martín; however they only reached minimal development and abandonment before finally sold most or all their interests back to Pindell in 1840 This period marks the beginning of what would eventually become known as Wildwood's history as a rural cattle country community where farmers managed large herds oflivestock while others engaged in fishing and boating activities around EscobarKey/Brickell Key harbor including chartering vessels for trips downriver through today's Marco Island Passage linking Tampa Bay with Lake Okeechobee during this time period wild woods Gazetteer said "No place has more than one year’s experience without producingany effects...It may be well hereto leave our sportless taskof enumerating thematic influences which have shaped our lifehereonunolithically unimportant." This sentiment persisted well beyond World War II when many servicemen settled here during times such as Korea And Vietnam

He set up a home near what is now Seward Park Boulevard and installed a blacksmith shop and foundry which he named "Wildwoods Forge". In 1912, wildwood became an incorporated city under the name "Waldorf". At that time it had just over 100 residents but has since grown to include over 1,000 people including more than 100 businesses along Broadway Street alone! Today Waldorf continues to be known for its unique architecture including its Art Deco-style buildings as well as its downtown area which features many cultural attractions such as The Waldorf Astoria hotel & restaurant/bar/. One of the earliest businesses established in Wildwood was A&P Supermarket which opened its doors on Broadway Street in 1926(). Over time other local businesses have also come and gone but two that are still highly respected are JB Hi-Fi Audio Video (opened 1957) and Harry's Pizza (opened 1948). Both stores remain popular tourist destinations today thanks to their amazing architectures as well as their great food!
Wildwood was founded in 1872 by J.W. Wildwood and the first post office opened in 1873. The town grew rapidly after it was given a charter from the Florida Legislature in 1875, becoming an official city on July 1, 1886. In 1916, Wildwood became a state park and was renamed to Wildwood-on-the-Lake after wildflowers that grow there.
