Wildwood is a town located in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,381 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Hollywood metropolitan area. Wildwood was founded in 1892 by J.P. Morgan and his brother James as a small farming community on the east side of Monroe County, about northeast of Kissimmee. By 1907, wildwood had developed into an agricultural center with more than 100 farmers and their families producing hay, cotton, oats, cornmeal, eggs and chickens. By 1930 Wildwood had become the largest city in Monroe County with a population of 3,000 residents. The city's growth accelerated during World War II when war production rose sharply in Monroe County and demand for goods increased in nearby Floridas; Wildwood became one of the most important military installations within Central Florida. In 1957 Wildwood lost its charter as an independent municipal government to Kissimmee after years of wrangling over taxation issues between the two cities; however it regained its charter in 1978 under new leadership that included then-Mayor Joe Condon who led it through several difficult times including being placed on bankruptcy twice before finally escaping impeachment proceedings in 1992 while still mayoralty-eligible due to term limits. In 1999 Wildwood voters approved incorporation into Kissimmee as an unincorporated community adjacent to that city proper; however annexation did not happen until 2004 when all but 2 out of 5 precincts within rural boundaries were annexed into kissimmee proper with only one precinct remaining undeveloped which has since been renamed North Plantation Estates . As part of annexation process properties located outside incorporated boundaries were reassessed for property tax purposes which resulted in some increases for those living inside incorporated boundaries (although no increase was granted to those living outside annexation areas). The 2002 Stonington tornado damaged much of what remains standing from WildWOOD's early days: homes dating back to 1892 have been demolished or razed (the first home was built on land that would later be annexed into Kissimmee), businesses have closed down (including a shoe store founded by John Witherspoon), creek crossings are now single-lane undrinkable water access points where people used to catch fish (a source of income until recently), and many historical artifacts have been misplaced or destroyed over time--most notably county courthouse building torn down during prohibition efforts which served as both business and social headquarters for earlyWildWooten citizens ().
