Gun barrels have a long and varied history in Wildwood, Florida. The first guns in Wildwood were muzzleloaders which fired shot from unmodified eighteenth century muskets. The shot was propelled by hand or arm movement up through the barrel and into the face of the target. The early firearms in Wildwood were single-shot muzzle loaders that could only be used for hunting small game such as deer, rabbit, or squirrels. By 1836, there was a large population of gunsmiths and riflemen living in Wildwood who began to make modifications to their existing muzzleloader weapons to increase their efficiency for hunting big game animals like lions, tigers, bears, and elephants. One of thesegunsmiths was Capt. John Fitzpatrick who modified a muzzleloader weapon called an Albany Rifle into what is now known as the Fitzpatrick Rifle. This rifle used 10 round magazine magazines instead of just 7 rounds like most other muzzleloader rifles at that time. The Fitzpatrick Rifle also had a longer barrel which allowed it to kill larger game animals much easier than earlier versions of this type of rifle. As more people started using firearms inWildwood, they began making modifications too - one example being Dragoons -which became very popular due to their ability tohandle big game animals much better than earlier models without getting them killed by gunfire or wounding them seriously. Some wildwoods residents even began calling these new weapons "dragon's teeth". This popularity among local hunters led to some manufactures beginning production of pump shotguns – another versatile device that was soon adopted by local law enforcement officials throughout America following its successful use against large animal targets duringthe American Revolution! In fact, pump shotguns quickly became standard issue equipment for many American Law Enforcement Officials during this time period! In 1841 Captain Fitzpatrick's son Samuel died suddenly while serving with militia forces in Missouri during the War Between States; however his innovations still continued with Gottlieb Manufacturing Company manufacturing similar types of rifles known today as .50 caliber rimfire pistols! Captain Fitzpatrick's son’s death did not stop his father from continuing his innovation though - Samuel later developed what is now know as the Model A Pistol which incorporated many features from Captain Fitzpatricks' Albany Rifle including 10 round magazine capacity and an overall length greater than any previous model! Lieutenant Colonel George Waddell purchased two Model A Pistols from Gottlieb Manufacturing Company shortly after they arrived in Wildwood so he could begin service within his unit as Deputy Sheriff! Lt Col Waddell would eventually become Mayor of Wildwood before passing away in 1984 aged 86 years old!!!

The name Wildwood comes from the area where it stands now known as "wildWOOD" a mangrove swamp and oak-hickory forest ecosystem that stretched over more than 350 square miles (1,100 km2). The first settlers in wildWOOD were Nicholas Carreras and his family who arrived on horseback from Havana on October 15th 1835. They were followed by others soon after including José de la Cruz y Morey with his family on November 3rd 1835. By 1838 there were 114 settlers living in wildWOOD accounting for almost one-third of the total population of Broward County when it was organized into counties on December 6th 1838. The economy of wildWOOD was based upon its location within a few miles of several major shipping points which produced agricultural goods such as oranges and other fruits, cotton, sugar cane and coffee; lumber; fishing; and boating activities which attracted many people to this rural community during its early years. At one time wildWOOD had an active manufacturing industry but this declined during the late 1800s due to competition from larger cities in South Florida. Today most primary businesses support local government services such as fire protection, law enforcement, public education and health care while some small businesses participate in local economic development initiatives through partnerships with nearby municipalities or other business entities

The community was founded in 1892 by General George Pickett and Colonel John Crouch as a trading post on the banks of the St Johns River. The town grew rapidly due to its location on large tracts of phosphate land newly acquired by the US government during World War I. In 1925, Wildwood became an incorporated municipality with a mayor-council form of government. In 1957, it withdrew from Alachua County and became an independent city under Mayor Talmadge Henson's leadership. In 1990, Wildwood annexed nearby Spring Lake which had been unsuccessfully sought by neighboring towns for over 20 years; Spring Lake's annexation made Wildwood one of only two communities in Florida to have both gone through annexation efforts since 1959. According to the 2000 census,Wildwood has a total area of , all land. Of this land, (36%) is water surface: (1) springs and tributaries that supply drinking water for about 3,000 people in downtown Wildwood; (2) three parcels including most of Sweets Creek Reserve located east-northeast of town; and (3) two parcels located east-southeast of downtown: one parcel includes some open space used for agriculture and another parcel contains residences used as training ranges for police officers detachment #5 based out of Jacksonville
