The town was founded in 1847 by George Washington Carver and has since been home to a variety of businesses, including a gun factory and ammunition store. In 1969, Wildwood became the first municipality in Florida to approve handgun possession for all law-abiding citizens6. This ban on handguns was overturned two years later7. Wildwood, Florida is a small town located in Leon County, Florida. The population was 1,569 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. The name Wildwood comes from two sources: one from an old map which show wildwoods near Clearwater, and the other from white settlers who called it "Willow Grove". The first reference to Wildwood came in 1821 when George Washington was visiting the area. In 1828, Joshua Henshaw purchased land at what is now Wildwood and named it after his father-in-law, General Daniel Morgan. In 1831, James Kenedy bought additional land and renamed it Wildwood after his plantations near present day Jacksonville Beach. In 1835, Major John Crouch established a military post here known as Fort Brooke which served as a base for Confederate forces during the American Civil War. After Union forces took over Fort Brooke in 1865,Wildwood became known as "Fort Worth" due to its status as a Confederate stronghold during that time period. The original buildings of Fort Brooke still stand today including the officers’ quarters and powder magazine which are open to visitor inspection each weekday morning between 9am and 11am (except holidays). A replica of the fort can be found on Saveen Field off US Highway 321 west of town center across from KFC restaurant/cafeteria (the exact location changes every year). Today's fort also contains exhibits about life at Fort Brooke during Reconstruction and Operation Crossroads during World War II. It should be noted that some buildings were destroyed by Hurricane Matthew in 2018; however all remaining structures within Fort Brooke are still standing providing valuable insight into early 20th century Floridians’ lives hereabouts! Wildwood was a small community in Polk County, Florida, located on the St. Johns River. The population was 793 at the 2000 census. It ceased to exist as a municipality after it lost its charter in 1998 and merged with neighboring Winter Park. The first settler in Wildwood was John Sperling who arrived in 1851. In 1856, he and his wife Margaret built a home on what is now NW corner of 6th Avenue & 2nd Street. They were the first white people to live there and had six children. In 1887, Wildwood's post office opened and served the community until 1898 when it merged with Winter Park to form one town block. At that time, only men could vote for town officials and all women were not allowed to vote or hold any municipal jobs until 1978 when they gained access through amendment of the state constitution
