Wildwood is a small town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ft. Walton Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. Wildwood was founded in 1836 by General James Wilkinson and Colonel John Chilton as a trading post on the lower Stonington River. In 1841, Wildwood became an incorporated village with a government run by trustees. On January 1, 1907, Wildwood annexed the neighboring town of Pompano Beach and became one municipality under the name of Escambia County. The name "Wildwood" was chosen to represent all aspects of this new community- including its woodlands, rural character and wide open spaces. When Escambia County merged with Duval County on August 15, 2009 to form Bay county, Wildwood was placed within Bay county's jurisdiction for tax purposes but remains unincorporated within Bay county proper. According to the 2000 US Census data, there are 1,812 people living in Wildwood (or its annexations). Wildwood is a small town in Duval County, Florida. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It lies within the Palm Beach-Boca Raton-West Palm Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by market traders from Jacksonville in 1877 as a convenient location for buying and selling goods on the wilds of Florida. By 1881, it had become known as "The Promised Land" because of its isolation from other settlements and its promise of virgin land. In 1889, Wildwood became part of newly formed Duval County when it was created from parts of Putnam and Sumter counties. The following year saw the opening of one of Duval County's first stores, which became the nucleus around which townspeople built their homes—the Wildwood Store and Hotel (later called the Palm Beach Post). In 1905, wildflowers were first grown here to sell to farmers in nearby West Palm Beach. In 1919, Wildwood voters passed a resolution calling for annexation by Boca Raton; Boca Raton incorporation followed in 1922. That same year saw construction begin on what would become known as One Tree Hill Avenue; this roadway – stretching today from I-95 north to US-1 south –marks Wildwood's unofficial downtown core today. In 1931, when Duval County merged with Hillsborough County (then part of Tampa), Wildwood became a part of Hillsborough Township (now St Petersburg). At that time there were only two businesses open in town: The Bank and The Florist shop on One Tree Hill Avenue; both businesses closed during World War II due to wartime rationing. The Town Hall building that now stands on First Street served as headquarters for several years until 1965 when an annex was built adjacent to municipal hall at 814 S Southeast Blvd., becoming home to fire departments until 1995 when they relocated back into Municipal Hall where they remain currently operable today under new management as Heritage Park Fire Services Incorporated (HHFSI). Today Wildwood is a vibrant small town with many unique traditions including its annual Pumpkinfest Parade & Music Festival October 15th thru 17th each year!
Wildwood was founded by James Fenton in 1835. It became a Seminole Indian village in the 1840s and was abandoned in the 1860s. The area was first developed as a citrus plantation town, but it declined during the Great Depression. In the late 1940s, Wildwood experienced a resurgence as an annex of Kissimmee, Florida.
