In 1898, the United States acquired a tract of land in what is now Wildwood, Florida from Spain. The land was used for cattle and Seminole Indian farming until it was donated to the State of Florida by the Spanish government. The first white settlers arrived in Wildwood in 1891. In 1912, the town's name was changed to Wildwood Springs after a stream that ran through it. In 1959, Wildwood became an incorporated city.
