Weston, Florida is a small town located in Okeechobee County, Florida. The population of Weston was 9,591 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1892 by John A. Weston and his family. John A. Weston was president of the First National Bank of Weston and a member of the first board of directors for Miami-Dade County. He also served as treasurer for Miami-Dade County from 1896 to 1898 and as mayor from 1912 to 1916. His son John B.] Weston became an assistant county attorney in 1916 and then associate Justice on the circuit court from 1924 to 1951; he also served as chairman of that body from 1951 to 1957. In 1955, he succeeded his father as president and CEO of First National Bank (now Wells Fargo) in Weston Village, which is now a part of Coral Gables; he continued until his death in 1988. In 1949, Weston donated land for Palm Beach Gardens public schools when that community opened its doors after years Of effort by local businessmen and officials led by Mayor Art Rooney Sr.. The first school building was purchased for $10,000 with money raised by bake sales and car wash nights at Weston's Baptist Church on Ulysses S Grant Boulevard between Southwest Eighth Street and Northwest Seventh Avenue; it opened September 1st, 1950 with 60 students in grades PreK-12th grade combined who were taught largely through United States history lessons conducted by Revd Drs Wm Jorgensen (1873-1939), Luther Burbank (1874-1952), Chas Mosely (1878-1965), Harry Truman (1945-) . Weston, Florida was founded in 1851 by John Weston and his brother James. The town was named for John's father-in-law, Colonel George Weston. The Weston brothers began the first cotton plantation in the area and it became one of the most important cotton plantations in Florida. The plantation was sold in 1865 to a group of Americans who changed its name to Confederate Plantations (later known as Crystal River Farms). The plantations were used for slave labor until the end of the Civil War. After the war, many people from Weston moved to Jacksonville and other parts of Florida. In 1925, Crystal River Farms was sold to an oil company and it became part of Gulf Oil Corporation. At that time, some people in Weston decided to move back to their old hometown and started a community called Southport. Today, Southport is a historic district that includes homes from both before and after World War II.
