By 1850, Weston had a population of over 100 people. The discovery of oil in nearby Mobile in 1911 led to rapid growth in Weston until the 1920s when oil production began to decline. During World War II, Weston served as a military supply depot for the allied forces in North Africa and Europe. After the war, the town experienced modest growth until it peaked around 1960 with a population of over 300 people. After declining populations and high levels of crime beginning in the early 2000s, local officials announced plans to demolished all but one of the buildings from what was once an elegant downtown district that has been reduced to an unrecognizable mess since then. Although little is known aboutCaptain James 'Jim' Weston or his life before he settled down near Tampa Bay (then St Petersburg), some elements suggest that he had experience as both a sea captain and landowner who attained success through enterprise and hard work." Jim's ancestor John Wesley 'Wesley' Fox may have been born circa 1785 on board ship "Mayflower" which landed at Plymouth Rock on April 15th 1620 after sailing from England with 103 passengers including twelve women and thirteen children - four of which were killed at landfall; however there is no evidence that this event happened on shoreline adjacent to present day Gainesville). It should be noted that records show that area now bounded by 10th Street Northeast (to east) Avenue South (to west), US Highway 1A (east) – currently home to Rummel’s supermarket - Boulevard/Alafaya Trail /Everett Street NE – once part of current-day Donelson Park – contain early deed recordings dating back more than two centuries! As such we can only speculate as to how these areas formed where they do today given their lack contemporaneous records !! In 1835 Captain James & MrsMary Weston moved from London UK into what would become known as Grantston Plantation along State Road 2A north side lot just southwest corner Of Highways 1A & US1A now part Of Alafaya Trail . Grantsontown [sic] Post Office opened Dec 3rd1837 under Capt JWG Ward 5 years later Sept 8th1841 . First School #2 open Nov 6th 1839 . Many Farms here also starting growing pears 9 acres lots here so cleared started 11 acres plat Oct 14 1861 .. 400 acre farm located here Dec 1862 .. Platted Feb 1865.. Name changed To:Weston , FL Nov 3rd 1865 .. Retired Jan 2078 .... Indian Wars fought here Aug 12 1862 thru May 1865 ... Mar 30 1865…..
