Weston, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. It was founded by Captain James Weston in 1836. The name of the town comes from the Miami and Erie Canal which ran through it at that time. The canal was built to connect the Ohio River with Lake Okeechobee. Captain Weston had help from his friends and family to build the canal and he named the town after them. The first settlers in Weston were farmers who grew corn, beans, cotton, sugarcane, and other crops. They also raised chickens and pigs. By 1860, there were about 150 people living in Weston. The population peaked around 1800 before declining over time due to various factors such as disease, warring Indian tribes, and economic decline. In 1925, when Polk County was created, Weston became part of it. In the late 19th century during Reconstruction efforts following the American Civil War (1861-1865), many African Americans fled southward for fear of white violence or economic oppression back home in states like Alabama or Mississippi. Many of these men headed north into what would become Polk County looking for a new start but they also brought their families with them when they moved into Weston Township near Clearwater Bayou on October 14th 1892 – less than one year after its incorporation as a separate municipality under state law ̶ . This event is often called “The Arrival” because so many black families chose this location specifically because it offered better prospects than where they had been living before their arrival in South Florida ̶ . There were no schools until 1896 whenWFDS opened up on Westshore Drive which later became known as Middlebrook Road ̶ . After years of progressivism by local officials including Superintendent JN Whitehead who spearheaded construction of two schoolhouses starting September 16th 1902 along Clearwater Bayou ̶ , Second Ward Alderman John Sinkenson chaired an effort to get money from county commissioners to open up community education opportunities for all residents regardless race or social class ̶ . On February 6th 1906 Supervisor Whitehead presented a petition signed by more than 200 citizens demanding that WFDS be renamed Clearwater Heights School District after Daughters of Charity Charity School located on Calafia Avenue (now NW 36th Street) just east of 7 Mile Road –– ._ This request was denied because superintendent Whitehead felt that giving away land would only benefit white hands while disadvantaging black residents––._ v/s Reverend Amos Cecil Cook who served as First Ward Pastor from 1904 until his death in 1941
