In 1841, General Pedro Menéndez de Avilés set up a post at what is now known as Notre Dame Avenue and named it Las Brisas de las Aguas (Honey Springs). The community grew quickly due to its location on a navigable river and its close proximity toMiami. In 1846, Jacob Hennepin announced plans for a town in this area and laid out the present-day Weston on four square miles of upland swampy land north of thenational road Higuain–Aguilera Road. In 1865, John Sweeny platted what is now called Northeast corner of Northwest 1/2 avenue and Northwest 10th Street east of Second Street near today's tennis courts; he named it Tomball after his home state Tomball County in Texas where he had been born. In 1870, Jno Pemberton platted what are now northeast corner of Northwest 1/2 avenue and NW 10th street west of Second Street near today's Walmart store; he called it Kendall because his familyowned alot of land thereabouts including some lots still extant on that block today. In 1875 João Rodrigues founded the city limits which extended from NW First St.-Northeast corner to SW Eighth Ave.–Southwest corner along Santa Fe Trail–SW Third St.–Washoe Ave.–NW First St.; he gave all these lands their current names: Southwest Corner (now Manatee), Northeast Corner (now Coral Gables), East Side (now Sunrise), Tomball Corner (now Weston) etc., thus ending any confusion about which blocks were originally part of which towns or cities! According to history reported by WSU Extension archaeologist Drs Samuel Funkenstein & Jerry Kruglanski “the boundaries as they exist today were drawn by José Rodrigues who surveyed the area around 1890 when northwest corner NE 2nd Ave., northwest corner NW 10th St., northeast corner SW 8th Ave., southeast corner SW 3rd Ave., southwest corner NW First St.—were all within municipal limits established by ordinance passed December 21st 1870” while also adding that no formal boundary changes took place until 1912 when an entirely new municipality was created—Manatee County! What we have here then are two historical documents showing how certain areas did actually end up with their current name given by those who lived there at that time!” It would not be until 1917 that another official document would be filed giving our present day boundaries: Miami Dade County plat book #1 sheet 16 page 129 et seq.. This document shows that Southwest Corner became Manatee County and Northeast Corner became Coral Gables County while Tomball Corner remained Weston Township! According to this document both areas had already experienced numerous waves of settlement over the years so no real change took place…until 1912 when an entirely new municipality was created—Manatee County! What we have here then are two historical documents showing how certain areas did actually end up with their current name given by those who lived there at that time!
