West Park is located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, within the city of Miami. It is a small town situated on the edge of a swampy area that was once used for hunting and fishing. The original settlers were Dutch immigrants who arrived in the early 1800s. They built homes and farms around what is now West Park. The town was founded by Captain John Sweeny in 1892 as a seasonal hunting and fishing locale. He named it after his home state of New York City, which he had visited while on leave from the US navy. The first post office was established in West Park in 1893. By 1907, there were over 100 residents living in West Park. In 1916, Mayor James Ahern designated West Park as an official municipality under Miami-Dade County jurisdiction. That year, Los Angeles Dodgers player Branch Rickey purchased land near present day West Park to establish his own baseball park known as Hollywoodland Recreation Area (Hollywoodland). The stadium complex that exists today was constructed during the early 1920s as part of this effort to accommodate American League baseball operations at what was then known as Hollywood Studios (now Walt Disney World). At its completion, Hollywoodland consisted of a major league ballpark with grandstands and other buildings used for movie production and other purposes; two minor league ballparks; a training ground for players; and four large ponds used for swimming, fowling, fishing, skating and boating.

West Park, Florida was founded in 1892 by pioneers. The community was named for Captain John West and his family who had settled there in 1879. The first post office was established in West Park on December 1, 1890. In 1906, the name of the community was changed to Fort Myers Beach to honor Commander Edward M. Lee of the United States Navy who had served in that area during World War I. On May 5th, 1912, Fort Myers Beach residents voted to create a town and the first mayor of Fort Myers Beach was elected. On July 15th, 1916, Fort Myers Beach became an independent city with its own government and mayor. The city of Fort Myers Beach experienced many prosperity years until it lost its status as a municipality due to budget cuts made by then Mayor Joe Bailey in the early 2000s. As a result of this experience, many local businesses closed down or moved out of town because they could not afford to keep up with increases in property taxes which were then being levied by the new municipality while still within the city limits of Fort Myers Beach. In recent decades much progress has been made at City Hall including passage of a $2 million bond referendum for infrastructure improvements such as new roads and sidewalks; approval of annexation requests from multiple neighboring municipalities; establishment of a Parks & Recreation Department; creation of an Economic Development Authority which is responsible for helping small businesses thrive within our COMMUNITY OF FORT MYERS BEACH As part-of their efforts to improve economic development opportunities within our COMMUNITY OF FORT MYERS BEACH , Mayor Joe Bailey has also partnered with local Chamber members to form an Infrastructure Committee which will develop plans for improving all aspects relatedto transportation (road repairs/widening), public works (parking lot resurfacing/ beautification), commercial revitalization (e-commerce space), and downtown redevelopment (the construction or relocation of several large facility).
