The first holster store was called the Pistolsmith and it was located on Sixty-seventh Street in West Park. The store was run by Mr. John A. Fenton and his son, John A. Fenton Jr., until 1955 when they moved to their current location on Seventeenth Street in West Park. The first Concealed Carry Permit program in the United States took place at the handgun shop operated by Mr. Fenton. This permit program allowed residents of West Park to carry handguns without fear of being arrested or having their gun confiscated. The permit program ended in 1973 but continued to be used as a training ground for new concealed carriers throughout South Florida until 1986 when it was discontinued due to budget cuts within the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. In 1984, firearms manufacturer Sturm Ruger offered a deal to local gun dealers whereby all pistols sales would be given away free of charge to anyWest Park resident who purchased a Sturm Ruger pistol from one of their stores. West Park, Florida is a census-designated place located in Hillsborough County, Florida. The population was 3,719 at the 2010 census. As of the 2000 census, the population was 2,985. It is adjacent to Tampa and Pembroke Pines. The community was founded by two brothers in 1875 as a rural retreat for farmers and their families on what is now West Park Boulevard. The first post office opened in 1876 and it remained in operation until 1959. The community became an incorporated town in 1957 and has since grown into one of South Florida's most vibrant suburbs. West Park was founded in 1892 by George Washington Morrison, a Methodist minister and citrus grower. The first land for the park was purchased from the Seminole Tribe of Florida. The park is located on 240 acres of rolling hills near Pensacola, Florida. The first public golf course in West Park was built at Morristown Golf Course in 1895. It became a private club in 1923 and is still used today. In 1904, the United States Congress passed an act that donated 1,500 acres of land to West Park as part of the Homestead Act. The land included portions of present-day Pensacola and Gulf Breeze,Florida. In 1925, West Park opened its second golf course - Pinehurst Plantation Golf Club - which continues to be one of the most popular courses in America today. The National Register of Historic Places listings in Hillsborough County include three structures within West Park: Morrison House (1892), Donelson Road Presbyterian Church (1925), and Morrison School (1912). In 1931, President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated South Padre Island Naval Station to serve as the homeport for the United States Navy's Fleet Air Arm during World War II. During World War II, many military airfields were constructed or enlarged within or adjacent to West Park such as Tampa Army Airfield and Merrill Field north of town; Thule Air Force Base on island east of town;and Eglin AFB on Gulf Coast just south of Pensacola Beach

West Park, Florida was created on December 12, 1925 as a result of the New Deal. The land for West Park was donated by Captain James E. West and his wife Esther. It was named in honor of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's fourth term in office.
