In 1868, Spanish settlers moved into what is now West Park from Havana, Cuba. They named their new town La Romana after General Ramón José Cámpora y Morales who had been overthrown by Spain in 1868 after leading a successful uprising against Spanish rule. After only three years as a settlement, La Romana was abandoned because of lack of water and food supplies. However, within two years another group of Spanish colonists had arrived to help support the original Germans while they rebuilt their log cabin on Grosse Ischs. This time they called their new community Santo Domingo which means "Holy Dominic." Over time other names were given to this Settlement including: Santa Fe de la Mina (1893), Villa Española (1914), Villa Boricua (1921), Rancho Aguaje (1945) and finally Fort Myers Beach Community Association Incorporation Incorporated on October 15th 1959 which became known as West Park Community Association Incorporated effective November 1st 1959 until its dissolution effective February 12th 1990 due to changes made by the Hillsborough County Commissioners seat criteria changed from being part of Hillsborough County to growing south westward within Hillsborough county limits making it difficult forWest Park CCIA to remain open meeting place for commissioners election purposes
The history of West Park, Florida is rooted in the Seminole Wars. In 1819, eastern Seminoles attacked a group of settlers near what is now West Park, Florida. The settlers fought back and drove the Seminoles off their land. This event helped start the area's tradition of military engagement and conflict between Native Americans and European colonists. In 1928, a group of businessmen from Miami founded The Everglades Foundation to manage the water resources of South Florida. They wanted to create a park that would be accessible to everyone, regardless of social class or economic background. The foundation donated money for the park and named it after Dr. James Kossuth West Jr., who had been instrumental in helping them achieve success. The park has seen many changes over its years-from being a small rural community to becoming one of South Florida's most popular tourist destinations. In 2016, it was announced that West Park would become home to an additional theme park called World Aquariums Orlando!
