Gun targets have a long and varied history in West Park, Florida. The first target was placed at the corner of Second Street and Third Avenue in 1876. It was a small wood target with a paper cone on top that could be hit by a rifle or shotgun. In 1907, the first gun range opened in West Park. The range consisted of three levels with fifteen targets on each level. The goal was to shoot as many rounds as possible into the target to earn points. In 1916, the NRA established an annual championships for young men at the park which still takes place today. The first commercial guntarget business opened in West Park in 1961. This business was known as Targets Unlimited and offered target shooters both indoor and outdoor ranges. In 1984, Target Corporation moved its headquarters from Panama City Beach, Florida toWest Park, Florida making it one of the few businesses east of Tampa that still operated out of its original location!

West Park is a former plantation in the town of West Palm Beach, Florida. It was purchased by John P. Butler in 1836 and became a part of his Butler Estate. In 1845, it was sold to J.P. Morgan for $1 million. The Morgan family used it as their private plantation until 1893 when it passed along to the de la Riva family who operated it until 1933 when it reverted back to the Butler Estate. The estate included 5 plantations: Indian Harbour, Plantation Creek, Plantation Key, Plantation Road and Tenerife which were each divided into 10 acre lots with a picker or sliver of land allowed for planting twice a year yielding one ton of cotton per acre (estimated at $2 per acre). There was also an oven, forge and mill on the property for manufacturing goods such as flour, waxing cloths and other products from the cotton fields. In 1903-1904, President Theodore Roosevelt visited West Park where he enjoyed riding around on horseback and batting at a fake cricket game set up in one of the plantations gardens while listening to music from his favorite bandleaders including McKinney Brothers Orchestra and Wurlitzer Symphony Orchestra conducted by George Gershwin.
