In fact, several African Americans who hadsidicated themselves from white society found their way back into West Park through businesses and other means during this time period including Wilt Chamberlain's first professional basketball game played at West Park Recreation Center on November 17, 1974; Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s final speech at Jacksonville Civic Auditorium on April 4, 1968; James Baldwin's "The Fire Next Time" speech given at Theater One four days before his assassination; Mrs. Robert Fenton's wedding procession from her home near State Road 519 westward down Fifth Avenue past Stonewall Jackson Boulevard on January 31st 1965; Mrs., Edwin Edwards' funeral procession from Episcopal Cathedral eastward along Third Avenue south past Central Ave.; Mayor Roy Ford addressing crowd following burial service for assassinated Mayor Jeraldine Ferraro at Everglades National Cemetery on October 15th 1973 all took place within a radius of 10 miles of downtown Tampa). Another key factor leading up to WestPark's success included its location adjacent to major phosphate mines that produced fertilizer for agriculture across Southeast Florida during World War II so the town became known as "Fertile Green". This production ended around 1945 when demand for fertilizer plummeted due primarily to technological advances made by other countries such as Germany and Japan which began producing more affordable substitutes such as phosphates themselves without needing our help (unlike us who sat idly by).

In 1912, Zelda Fenton donated land to west park after her husband's death. The first school in west park opened in 1914 and was located on what is now Northwest 67th Street and Fifth Avenue. In 1916, Second Baptist Church built a large addition to the east side of town which became known as "The Temple." In 1922, Dr. John Pemberton donated land adjacent to his home on Northwest 71st Street for the erection of a high school for black students from South Broward County. In 1952, due to overcrowding at Coral Gables High School, West Park High School opened Its doors for students from Miami-Dade County Central High School and other nearby schools which were integrated into that year's local school district reorganization. In 1959, construction began on what would become known as "The towers" - two buildings designed by architects Arthur Ashe and Donald Jackson that stand today as part of the shopping mall complex called One University Place near Northwest 71st Street and Fifth Avenue. That same year also saw the opening of Northside Elementary School (now defunct), which served both west park residents and people living near NW 107th street between Eighth Avenue and Ninth Avenue (later renamed East Side). On October 8th 1966 Hurricane Ivan made landfall along with winds up to 155 mph causing extensive damage across eastern Miami-Dade County including extensive damage to homes and businesses in west park including some that had been standing since the 1920s. That particular week saw many residents come together to collect items such as furniture from their destroyed homes before leaving for fear there would be no return following Ivan's wrath given its destructive power! A week later on October 15th1966 another major hurricane - this one named Jeanne - made landfall near Jupiter with winds up to 175 mph causing significant destruction throughout western Miami- Dade County including widespread damage to homes and businesses within west park including many that had beenstanding since the 1920s but much worse due its hellish Hispaniola storm surge potential! On November 2nd 1966 President Lyndon Johnson announced plans for Operation Wide Receiver - an effort led by then Assistant Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger aimed at rescuing citizens trapped inside tornado damaged areas during this time period! With only days left until Ivan struck again it seemed likely that more than just individual homeowners would perish...fortunately For those affected by Ivan (and Jeanne) WesternMiami Area Command organized an all night airlift resulting in 179 beneficiaries being picked up successfully! By Thanksgiving 1966 all survivors had been rescued or repatriated back into their original communities!
The first permanent residents of West Park were the Seminoles who arrived in 1835. They built their own homes and hunted game near what is now State Road 565. The area became a dependency of Tallahassee in 1841 and was known as "The Indianowan" because of its strategic location on the river. In 1865, the Florida Legislature designated West Park as a state park. The first president of Florida, James K. Polk, visited West Park in 1892 and pronounced it "the most beautiful place that I ever saw."
