The area that became West Park was originally known as Overtown and was developed by African American entrepreneurs during the early days of Miami's white flight. They named their development after Major General Andrew Jackson's home state of Louisiana (the original name for Fort Lauderdale), sinceJackson had been governor of that state at the time. In 1887, when Fort Lauderdale acquired its current boundaries as a result of Hurricane Felix, several thousand Africans were imported into the city to work on infrastructure projects such as water purification and road construction. The name "West Park" originated from the Spanish word "Puerto de la Florida". The first settler in what is now West Park was John Hargrave in 1824. In 1830, A.C. Beall and his family moved to what is now West Park from Jacksonville and named their land for General James Wilkinson who had won a battle at Pensacola Bay on December 8, 1795 against Spain's Admiral Carlos Manuel de Ayala which helped secure Florida's independence from Spain. In 1855-1857, Major General Edward Prentice built Fort Walton on an island in Lake Okeechobee that served as a military post during the Seminole Wars and later became known as Fort Walton Beach. The Post Office opened at Fort Walton Beach on October 15, 1855 under the name of Wacoalandia Springsborough; it changed its name to Fort Walton Beach on July 25, 1861 when it became part of Duval County after it was annexed by Jacksonville. Fort Walton Beach served as a training ground for troops during both World War I and World War II before being decommissioned in 1945 and becoming an open air museum known today as Western Military Museum .
