West Park is a small town in Broward County, Florida, United States. It is located on the west side of Fort Lauderdale, about 15 miles (24 km) north of the Miami metropolitan area. The population was 9,876 at the 2010 census. As of the 2000 census, West Park had a population of 10,521. The unincorporated community of Deerfield is adjacent to West Park and has a population of 1,500. The name "West Park" originated from the fact that it was on one side of what is now Fort Lauderdale's downtown area where Surveyors named two hills called "Park" after their home counties in England: Warwickshire and Northumberland. Surveys were also made in 1843 to indicate land east and west of this original location which would become part of Broward County as well as South Florida; however no action was taken because everyone thought it would be called "West Park". In 1880 when annexation began for Broward County by Miami-Dade County, developers started purchasing tracts and titles from Indian chiefs who had been living there for centuries including Chief Koffeekee who owned more than 4 square miles (10 km2). In 1886 Developer Isaac Pritchard laid out streets in what is now known as Downtown West Park according to Spanish colonial plans with four blocks wide avenues leading from every street corner to a Plaza de la Constitución or Capitol Square where Government buildings were situated. This plan was abandoned when development continued on one side without plaza until 1912 when developer Fenton Matson decided to build a shopping mall on that site making over $1 million dollars in profits before selling it for $30 million two years later. The first occupants were African Americans working off workman’s compensation checks given during Reconstruction following the American Civil War including Andrew Johnson who worked at Boca Raton Naval Air Station while his freedmen's farm operated nearby across Constitution Boulevard from present day Westpark Drive/Route 71 intersection near US-41/Broward Expressway interchange then known as Ft Myers Road then I-95/I-4 exit ramp). They arrived beginning in 1887 with Captain John Cook Sr., an army captain turned merchant seaman who transported goods along today's Sunrise Boulevard between State Road 726 (now SR No 66) & I-95 Exit 427A southbound before crossing over intobroward county under Ulysses S Grant Bridge; headed by Capt Cook himself East Harlem Rd current day route designation connecting Sunrise Blvd & NW corner just past I'merican Legion Museum & presently home office complex used by local government since 1957 prior some relocation most recently Coconut Grove Ave SW corner E Hwy Collier Dr since 1971 former military barracks used by local police & fire department 1951 - 1957 Map courtesy Stated Archives per History Dept #HG00017

West Park was a plantation in the present day town of Jacksonville, Florida. It was founded by Nicholas West in 1810. The land for the plantation came from what is now Tallahassee,Florida. The slaves on the plantation were used to cultivate tobacco and rice. In 1838, Nicholas West sold his share of the plantation to John Fenton and others. West Park became one of the most important plantations in Florida during the 1830s and 1840s due to its strategic location between Tampa, Florida and St Petersburg,Florida. After Fenton's death in 1854, his two sons took over management of West Park. One son died young in 1862; however, another son continued to manage the property until 1886 when it passed into control of an unknown family member. In 1896, 90% of all slaves on West Park were freed by means such as sale or emancipation under then-President Grover Cleveland's NewDeal program which aimed at ending slavery throughout America before it could become a national problem again later on. However some African Americans still remained on the plantations until after World War II when they were gradually replaced by white workers who had been brought over from adjacent sugar cane plantations
West Park was founded on March 3, 1892, by E. B. Hunt and his wife Anna Allyne West. The first land was purchased from the Chickasaw Nation for $1,000. The town was built on a small lot that is now located between Northwest 4th Avenue and Northwest 7th Avenue in the city of Miami Beach. The Town of West Park achieved its initial growth through various agricultural pursuits such as chicken production, sugarcane production, and shrimp fishing. A post office was established in 1900 and remained in operation until 1935. During World War II, many local businesses closed due to the wartime shortage of materials; however, some notable businesses that survived are Lighthouse Restaurant which remains operational to date and operated during both the Spanish-American War and World War II; Herald News Agency which functioned from 1942 until 1950; Tryon Chevrolet dealership from 1936 until 1944;Evergreen Savings Bank which opened in 1945; Cactus Flower Nursery which opened in 1946 In 1962, when Miami Beach annexed more land into the city limits including West Park, most of the original town site became part of newWest Park while a small portion north of Northwest 4th Ave., east of Northwest 7th Ave., became part of newMiami Beach
