The city was founded on August 16, 1907 by John Laughlin and Harry Dixon as West Kendall. The name derived from a west Indian word meaning "happy place." In 1912, Hernando Cortés visited West Kendall and recommended that the community be renamed for him because he had seen it as an ideal spot for a military post. It received this name after Cortés' visit. The first post office opened in 1913 and remained in operation until 1959. In 1924, Laughlin donated land to form the current city block; it contains parts of today's financial district and West Park Cathedral/Museums are located on this block. In 1927, construction began on what would become the world's largest air conditioning plant; it operated until 1973 when it was replaced by another larger plant. Today, many of downtown Miami's iconic buildings were built around this site: American Express Building (1927), Herald building (1928), State House (1929), World Trade Center (2001). Other early businesses include Wernher Von Braun’s ground zero launchpad at 3100 NW 39th Street during his space race experiments with Rockets 1 & 2; Emilio Castilla’s bakery on NE First Avenue from 1928-1960; A&P grocery store at NE 163rd Street from 1929-1969; FLORIDA AIRLINES tower at SW 126th Street from 1933-1974; Ponce de Leon Cigar Company building now known as Pompano Beach Casino Resort) which served as both company HQ until 1983 and then Pompano Beach Marina until 1998 Today much of downtown Miami is built around this site: American Express Building (1927), Herald building (1928), State House (1929), World Trade Center (2001).
