West Park is a community in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 21,538 at the 2010 census. It is part of the South Beach–Beach Cities area and is bordered to the south by Biscayne Bay and to the west by Everglades National Park. The community was founded in 1938 as part of a master plan for land that would become Miami Beach. The first settlers were white men who came from Georgia and Tennessee. They built small homes near what is now Overtown and started trading with Native Americans. The first African American to live in West Park was James Weldon Johnson, who came from Mobile, Alabama in 1894. He owned a grocery store on Flagler Street in Ocean Grove before moving to West Park in 1938 with his family. In 1951, after years of discussion and planning, Miami-Dade County purchased all of what became West Park from the original settlers for $19,000 cashier's check. At that time it was one of only two such purchases made during the early days of Miami-Dade County development. At its peak in 1962 there were over 100 businesses located within walking distance of each other within West Park boundaries alone! One major change brought about by county ownership was the introduction of zoning laws which limits development east or northeast of Washington Road (the then main street). This prohibition limited how many high rise buildings could be erected near downtown because it discouraged people from living too close together on top of each other like they had done on Flagler Street decades earlier! Today much smaller subdivisions line both sides Of Washington Road while large factories have been replaced by "starter homes" which are gradually being developed into larger homes - an excellent way to provide housing opportunities for low income residents without having them compete against more expensive neighborhoods!

West Park is a community located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 8,451 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area and is bordered by the city of Miami to the south and east, Biscayne Bay to the north, and Hollywood Boulevard to the west. West Park began as a small agricultural town that developed along an existing Native American trail. By 1892, West Park had 5 churches and over 100 residents. In 1922, when South Florida became an incorporated municipality, West Park became its first village. At that time it had a population of 1,500 people and seventeen businesses. The village continued to grow until 1959 when it merged with neighbouring parkland to form what is now known as West Park Township. The history of West Park goes back before Miami-Dade County was formed from land grants given out in 1853 by Spanish Governor Manuel Keyto Cepeda to various Creek Indian tribes for their support during Anglo-American exploration of Greater South Florida (later becoming Miami-Dade County). The Grantees were: Captain James Kappner; Colonel John Sibley; General George Pickens; Major James Purdy; Lieutenant Colonel Edward Hutton In 1853 King Philip II granted 4 square miles (10 km²) on Biscayne Bayou in present day Kendall Peninsula – bounded on the east by Northwest Third Street on Flagler Beach and on the west by Northwest Fourth Street – to Captain James Kappner for "the conversion thereof into a public road". This road soon became known as US 1 or Lee Highway because it led from Tampa through Palm Beach Gardens past Everglades National Forest into downtownMiami The first permanent settler in what would become West Park was John Sibley who arrived with his family in 1855 from Maine via Mobile Landing on Pensacola Bayou near present day Fort Lauderdale Captain James Kappner built some homes around 1850 while he served under military governor Don Carlos de Saenz y Menendez at Stonington Plantation near Key Largo In 1860 Captain Kappner sold about two acres (8 ha) of his original grant for $190 to local resident Wm Epps On July 3rd 1861 Captains JK Thomson & Henry Moylan established Preserve Almaguerie & Other Land Grants Co., Incorporated – composed principally of storekeepers interested in developing agriculture within developmentally handicapped areas – Chartered February 25th 1862 #2118 A company started with Lots Nos.– 7 lots containing 10acre each lot surveyed @ $5 per acre including 400 feet frontage good for stock raising valued at $4 million today These surveys have been published thusfar only thru Google Earth
West Park was founded in 1892 by Dr. J.C. West and his wife, Mrs. John A. McDowell, who also founded the First Presbyterian Church there. The original land for the park was donated by Anna Loring Keyes and her husband, James Keyes Sr., father of Anna Loring Keyes, who later served as mayor of Miami Beach from 1961 to 1969 and then as U.S. Ambassador to Spain from 1973 to 1977. The park is located on a tract of land that once belonged to Anna Loring Keyes's father-in-law, Commodore John D'Alberto Keyserling III, who died in 1910 at the age of 86 years old after a long and successful career in law enforcement and government service in Florida and elsewhere
