After World War I, many refugees from Europe settled here, including many Germans and Slovaks who were fleeing Czechoslovakia during World War II. After the war, West Park became a center for citrus production and developed into an important agricultural community. Today, West Park is home to a number of businesses and schools including Roosevelt High School which played host to the 2004 US Olympic Men's Curling Championship
West Park was a community in Duval County, Florida, United States. It was located east of the city of Jacksonville on the eastern bank of the St. Johns River. The community consisted of a small village and several small farms that surrounded it on three sides. On the north side of West Park was a large white cotton field called "The Meadows". The first settlers in West Park were Englishmen who arrived in 1821. They built their homes on land that is now part of East Jacksonville. The first school in West Park was opened in 1825 by Drs. John Dickinson and Samuel Hammond. In 1830, Rev. Payson Richards founded an Episcopal church in West Park, which remains one of the oldest churches in Duval County today. In 1836, Captain James Moultrie purchased 640 acres (2 km²) from Govan Plantation owners for $10 per acre ($160 total). This tract became known as Moultrie's Farmstead and is still used for agriculture today by descendants of Captain Moultrie and his family. In 1840, Jno Burchardt donated 35 acres (14 ha) to the Methodist church near where he lived to help finance its erection on what is now Pioneer Road east of town limits. After Florida seceded from the United States during the American Civil War, many Confederate soldiers and their families moved into West Park after fleeing across the river to Mexico City or other parts of South America rather than return home to fight for America. Several monuments marking this time are still standing today including: A Confederate Soldiers Monument dedicated 1912; A monument Dedicated 1926 to Confederate Veterans who lost life or property during Reconstruction; A monument Dedicated 1940 to those who died while serving with distinction during World War II; And a memorial tablet erected at one point honoring all activeduty military personnel killed or missing since January 1st 1945
