Captain Richardson helped provide food and shelter for the crew of the USS Constitution when it was attacked by Spanish pirates in 1827. He also donated vessels and supplies to the US Navy during its War against Spain. In 1840, Congressman William Allerton purchased 5 miles of beachfront property northeast of downtown Jacksonville from Captain David Dudley Richardson for $1,500 (). The Allerton family operated a ferry service between Jacksonville and Fort Walton Beach until 1951 when it became part of Gulf County Airport Authority. In 1845, General Alexander Hays established a military post at Fort Brooke on Tampa Bayou near present-day Citrus Heights Boulevard and Old Miami Road in what would become Jacksonville. In 1850, General Hays' post was moved to nearby Everglades National Park after Congress passed an act authorizing appropriations for that purpose (). In 1865, Major General James Biddle (the future Governor George Worry Hughes) ordered all Union troops out of Florida () so he could take controlof Mobile Bay (); this action led to the Battle of Gaines's Mill which ended with Confederate defeat (). In 1870 Admiral Farragut landed his forces at Pensacola (), prompting General Andrew Jackson to order all Union troops out () again (). This led to three days of skirmishing around Gaines's Mill before Union forces finally withdrew () without loss). The following year saw another change in ownership when Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt acquired 4 1/2 miles (7 km) along Pensacola Harbor from Senator John Sherman Forston (). Commodore Vanderbilt then renamed the peninsula "West Palm Beach" after himself (). Commodore Vanderbilt spent much money building hotels and gardens along his new beachfront property; these features are still seen today on portions of Admiralty Pier within Manatee County . By 1886 there were over 100 residents living in West Palm Beach (); this number increased significantly when plans were made to build Hearst Castle here . By 1915 there were over 2200 people living in West Palm Beach (); this number has continued to grow since then .)

The population was 6,813 at the 2010 census. The area that would become West Park was first settled by Native American natives in the late 17th century. A group of United States Marines fought in World War II and were stationed there as part of Marine Barracks South on Biscayne Boulevard. In 1949, a large chunk of what is now West Park was annexed from Dade County and became part of the city of Miami Beach. In recent years, West Park has seen significant redevelopment with new housing developments being built near its central business district and sports stadiums used for college football and basketball games. Some residents have objected to this development because it has resulted in increased traffic congestion around their community center and schools.
