West Park is a census-designated place in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 6,874 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The name West Park comes from the Spanish word "park" which means "a place for walking." The community was developed on a high ground overlooking Northwest 27th Street and Northwest Eighth Avenue in the heart of South Miami-Dade. When it opened to development in 1949, there were only three homes and no businesses. In 1951, West Park became an incorporated municipality with its own government and police force. In 1965, when South Miami-Dade annexed much of northern Miami-Dade County, West Park lost its city status but kept its Police Department and Fire Department. The annexation left many jobs up for grabs as developers created new neighborhoods within the limits of what had once been West Park. A few years later in 1970 another annexation occurred when Biscayne Bay filled in most of downtownMiami making it difficult for people to find places to live near the waterfront without having their homes destroyed or sold at low prices. That year also saw the opening of nearby Kendall Yards shopping mall which quickly became one of South Beach's most popular destinations for shopping and entertainment during peak hours (4 p.m.–11 p.m.). At that time there were about 20 businesses located in total including several banks and a grocery store/ bakery complex called Acme Market Place (now part of PNC Arena). As more residents moved into areas like Kendall Yards and Intersection I Boulevard began to grow very slowly at first until 1984 when an interstate highway was built cutting off much needed commercial activity along Northwest Eighth Avenue creating what is now known as "The Median". During this time all but two businesses closed down leaving only one grocery store open - Smith's Produce - which remain open today thanks to Interstate 95 running directly through it! In 2006, after years of discussion between City Manager Donatella Diazsandroand Mayor Carlos Gimenezthe community voted unanimously to become an unincorporated area within Miamidade knowing they would still have their Municipal Services such as Police Department & Fire department provided by City Hall However tax dollars will not be used for any public investments such as infrastructure projects or improving schools etc., instead they will be put towards keeping our Municipal Services running smoothly while we work on developing new initiatives that will benefit both our community and our city! WestPark has seen some growth over recent years with more21 families moving into the Community since 2000 bringing total householdsaddingtothecommunityto27familiesin2010

West Park was created on a tract of land that was formerly part of the Plantation of Santa Rosa. The property was first surveyed in 1794 and purchased by Nicholas Florida, Sr. in 1802. He named it after his father, Nicholas Florida, who had been born in West Indies and arrived in North America in 1768. The first settler on the site was John Cook, who built a small cabin on the banks of the St Johns River in 1795. Cooks descendants continued to live there until 1800 when they sold their interest to Captain Nathaniel Webb of Charleston, South Carolina for $4,000. Captain Webb laid out a town on this site which he called West Park after himself and his family. In 1811, Captain Webb handed over control of West Park to Governor Andrew Jackson for $10,000 as part of an effort to improve transportation between Miami and Tampa Bay. When Jackson declared martial law during the Seminole Wars, he ordered all male Seminoles found within five miles of any military installation (including West Park) be deported without trial or return attempt. Many Seminoles managed to re-enter American society but many others were forced onto reservations or into slavery. Unfortunately for East Floridas slave owners, many Seminole women bore African Americans children who were raised as slaves under their own parents or other relatives until they reached adult status and could seek freedom from their bondage
In 1892, the town of West Park was annexed by Gainesville. In 1907, the town of East Gainesville was annexed by West Park. In 1912, the towns of North Gainesville and South Gainesville were annexed into West Park.
