The name of the park was changed to Jackson Square after General Andrew Jackson's visit to Jacksonville in 1828. In 1865, Jacksonville purchased 1/3 of tracts in present-day West Park from John Taylor and established it as their city limits.
West Park is a community located in Citrus County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It lies on U.S. Highway 9 south of downtown Orlando and east of Lakeland. The first permanent settler in West Park was James Acker who arrived in 1817. He named his farm "Acker's Grove." First white settlers were William Bradford and John Barber who came to live there in 1821. The Emerson family settled in what is now West Park in 1876, and the area became a part of Citrus County when it was organized as a county on November 3, 1907. During World War II, many women served in the military; among them were Belle Boyd (1943-1945), Mildred Ellerbe (1946-1950), Esther Ortega (1951-1955), Lois Carlson (1957-1959) and Vera Pritchard (1960-1963). In 1961, new homeowners built a road from Orange Blossom Trail to Sunrise Drive which runs through West Park - becoming one of its earliest residents. In 1957, Driscoll Brothers opened their grocery store at 51001 South State Road 381 which soon became known as "The Grocery Store with a Feeling." That same year saw the opening of Central High School by Winnie Mae Green and her husband Leon Greenhart Jr., one of the early private schools in Broward County. In 1962, Panthers Stadium opened temporarily as an elementary school for students from nearby Clearwater Elementary School before finally being moved to its current location near Interstate 495 four years later.

West Park, Florida was founded in 1836 by Colonel Isaac Hawkins and his wife. The town was named after a West Point plantation where Hawkins had been stationed as a military officer. It quickly grew as a farming community, and in 1845 it became the county seat of Hillsborough County. In 1907, West Park was annexed by Tampa Bay, and today it is a largely residential area with few commercial businesses. The earliest settlers to the area were Native Americans who lived near Lake Okeechobee. They built small villages along the lake's edge before moving inland in search of more fertile land. By 1800, the Seminole Indians had moved from their traditional hunting grounds into what is now West Park. Afterward, white settlers began arriving in increasing numbers, and by 1830 most of the original Indian population had died from Disease or war-related causes. In 1836, Colonel Isaac Hawkins purchased 4 tracts of land east of Tampa Bay on which he erected a home known as "Hawkins' Hermitage". The following year he married Lady Mercedes Bledsoe, daughter of Rear Admiral John Bledsoe II (the brother-in-law of Commodore Jason Cushman). The couple settled at West Park and started farming the land that would later become part of their community. In 1840 they also purchases 2 lots adjacent to present day Military Road for $100 each which formed what is now Old Hickory Avenue. From these initial purchases emerged one of Tampa's most important business districts - centered around Hawkins' home on Old Hickory Avenue - until its demolition in 1966 to make way for Interstate 95!
In 1892, the first organized picnic was held in West Park. The park had been acquired by the city of Jacksonville from developer John P. Morgan in 1884. In 1896, a new baseball diamond and playground were built on Park Boulevard. These facilities were later renamed as West Park Stadium and East Park Stadium respectively. In 1952, Jaguars football team moved to newly constructed Middle Tennessee State University's Neyland Stadium, becoming the first professional American football team ever to play there. That year also saw the dedication of a memorial to military veterans in honor of World War II soldiers killed in action at Iwo Jima. In 1957, GTE announced it would be moving its headquarters from northern Virginia to Jacksonville shortly before renovations were planned for then-West Park Stadium which would make it unable to house both teams at once (Jaguars played their home games at EverBank Field until 1999). On October 26th that year, prior to kickoff of the Jaguars' game against the Colts, GTE erected a large steel gate across Northwest Parkway which remains present today as part of Memory Lane Gate Memorial Park located within West Park boundaries
