West Park is a small, wooded town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ferry Pass–LifeLockCity metropolitan area. The town was organized on August 12, 1892 by developer S.A. Goode and postmaster A.B. Goode after they bought land from the Seminole Nation for $5 per acre (2 cents an acre). The first school opened in 1902 and the first store in 1903. The name "West Park" was chosen because it paralleled nature's east-west alignment which lie within its borders as well as being halfway between Pensacola and Mobile Bayou where the towns began to form together. On April 20, 1912, West Park became a city when it passed a vote to become one of two cities in Escambia County following passage of the Escambia County Charter Act of 1911 On February 8, 1915 West Park annexed nearby Toombsboro with its present boundaries; this annexation removed Toombsboro from East Point Township which bordered Westpark before that township was disbanded on December 30 of that year due to lack of growth thereabouts since its incorporation into Westpark On November 5th 1916 City Council repealed ordinance #1 making cigarettes tax exempt from income taxes effective January 1st 1917 Those same council members also repealed ordinance #3 prescribing building regulations for new businesses established within city limits Effective date: January 1st 1917 In 1922-1923 tensions escalated over zoning changes made by Planning Commission without prior approval by City Council thereby preventing future annexation or consolidation by either city including expansion into other municipalities nearby
In 1892, West Park was part of the plantation that belonged to the Duval family. The Duvals were forced to sell their land in 1913, and the state bought it from them in 1924. It was originally named Boggy Bottom Plantation. In 1928, it changed its name to West Park after Major General James A. West, who had helped purchase the plantation from theDuval family.
