West Palm Beach (formerly known as Palm Beach) is a town in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,687 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Ft. Lauderdale metropolitan area. The first humans to set foot in what is now West Palm Beach were Chinca and Achenegara Native Americans who journeyed from Cuba in search of trade goods with Spain during the early 15th century. In 1819, Captain John Dolphin opened up a trading post on Coconut Creek Boulevard just outside of town and named it "West Palm Beach". With its many fashionable hotels, casinos and resorts catering to both locals and tourists alike, West Palm Beach quickly became one of Americas most popular tourist destinations. By 1920, it had become an incorporated city under the name "Palm Beach", after then-Governor James Kounty's proclamation that incorporated towns should have their own namesakes. During World War II, much of what is now South Palm River State Park was used by ammunition storage yards along Interstate 95 near present-day Jupiter Island for Naval Air Station Mather Field which housed more than 100 Lockheed P-38 Lightning planes built at Plantation Airport on Jupiter Island for use against German forces in Europe; this area also includes portions of Fort Pierce State Park today One reason why West Palms has experienced rapid growth over the years has been its vast amount of undeveloped land which can be leased or sold for development purposes without ever having to worry about condemnation proceedings or building permits being obtained

In 1955, WPP merged with neighboring Palm Beach to form the largest municipal merger in American history when both cities had a combined population of over 2 million people. The rapid growth of WPP has led to some controversies which have been resolved through negotiation or agreement between the two communities. One such problem was that much of what makes West Palm Beach unique as an outdoor tourist destination has been developed without any public input or consent from residents who live near these attractions. This led to protests against development projects which typically affected only a small percentage of property owners while leaving most homeowners out of pocket; these protests are now usually called "Cities United" or "West Palmborger Resistance". Another issue which arose during this time period was traffic congestion caused by heavy vacationers visiting Gulfstream Park, Parrot Island and other popular tourist destinations within walking distance of downtown WPP along Interstate 95; this situation has since been solved through new transportation options such as bike lanes and walkways connecting all neighborhoods within downtown via bus lines
West Palm Beach was founded in 1892 as a small agricultural town on the eastern coast of Florida.
