West Palm Beach is a city located in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 133,846 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Ft. Lauderdale Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is bordered by Fort Myers to the north and east, Miami to the south and west, Boca Raton to the northwest and Naples to the southwest. The first people to live in West Palm Beach were Native Americans who hunted and gathered food in what is now Flagler County. In 1835 Spanish fishermen discovered land that would become West Palm Beach on January 12th when they sightedpassing boats on their way from Cuba with cedar trees for lumber. Captain Pedro Menéndez de Avilés landed his party at Jupiter's Key on December 14th and established a small town called Santiago del Estero about one mile (1 km) southeast of present-day downtown West Palm Beach. By 1840 Santiago had a school, jail, post office, cattle market, mercantile district and two stores; its importance led José Gomez y Ramírez to name it After Santiago del Estero (after its founders). The townsite was annexed by Fort Myers in 1844; after that it became an unincorporated community within Fort Myers Municipal District until 1959 when it was annexed into City of Miami proper as part of a merger between both cities. On May 15th 1870 Governor Carlos Manuel López de Santa María announced plans for annexation of all but three municipalities in Broward County – Pompano Beach (later renamed South Broward), Palmetto Bay and Boca Raton – making West Palm Beach one of only two counties not annexationd during his term as governor; the other was Broward County’s Pinellas Peninsula which became Tampa following its incorporation into Hillsborough County five years later As per law then prevailing, any increase or decrease in real estate values within incorporated areas resulted in re-appraisal plus interest charges payable by property owners subject thereto; accordingly prices for lots within city limits remained largely stable through much of this period despite increasing population density due mainly to immigration from Latin America On November 2nd 1902 Mayor James Fenton convened a meeting chaired by Judge Augustus Henthorn at City Hall attended by representatives from every municipality except Boca Raton where Mayor James Jakes decided against annexation pending further study This decision contributed significantly to rapprochement between City Government & Businesses beginning immediately thereafter which ultimately culminated with joint purchase of Lake Worth Golf Course by City & Businesses on October 1st 1903 . During First World War WPD served as Officer Commanding for
West Palm Beach was founded in 1905 as a small town on the east coast of Florida. It grew quickly and by 1918 it had become a major port on the Atlantic Ocean. The city was named for two palm trees, one located near the harbor and the other located in what is now downtown. In 1932, West Palm Beach became an incorporated city and annexed part of neighboring Fort Pierce.
