On October 1st 2009 West Melbourne's centennial year was celebrated with a parade through downtown followed by an open house celebration headlined by Mayor Joe DeSantis and his wife Lori at the Town Hall Annexe restaurant . There were many local dignitaries present including former UFL player Rick Majerus (who played for the Miami Dolphins) along with several members of Congress including Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.)In attendance were United States Senators Marco Rubio (R-Fla.)and Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), both men vying for re-election this year in states won by President Obama last November; state Rep.(D-Fla.) also made an appearance..

A primary reason for this rapid growth has been annexation by other municipalities: land reclamation from marshes and bayous; construction of Interstate 95; and population growth due to medium-density housing developments such as Sun Life Stadium (now MetLife Stadium) being built just outside the city limits on Everglades National Park property
